The hard-nosed contest between Iran and the US-Israel axis is rigorously spiralling with no sign of de-escalation and permanent truce. On the other hand, peace talks are repeatedly failing with both parties reluctant to reach a consensus. Amid such a fragile and tense geopolitical landscape, the latest news emerging from Tehran raises apprehension about steep internal political fissures within the theocracy of Tehran.
As per the sources, the President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian has tendered his resignation to the Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. The underlying reason for resignation is the extreme theocratic control and the iron fist of IRGC. In the letter, the Iranian President claims that at such a precarious scenario in the country, he is unable to discharge his duties and fulfill his responsibilities.
An unnamed official who is close to the Iranian political hierarchy disclosed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps(IRGC) has effectively taken control of the entire nation and its governance apparatus. They are the de-facto rulers and other institutions are officials who are kept out of the decision-making process. President Masoud Pezeshkian and other high-ranking officials are thwarted from the critical meetings and are not informed about war strategy, peace talks process etc.
Unable to withstand this iron fist of IRGC, the Iranian President vowed to resign as it is difficult to perform his duties. The anonymous official further said that serious fissures exist between President Pezeshkian and the head of IRGC, where the latter holds the lion share of the power and control’s majority of the country, with no stakes for the President. The IRGC decides not just the war strategy but also the way the economy functions and the way the country operates, the anonymous official further asserted.
According to the reports, President Pezeshkian has warned that IRGC is drifting the country towards disaster and financial ruin. However, the theocracy in Tehran has rejected the claims that unable to bear the dominance of IRGC President is upto resignation. Theocracy reiterated that the Presidential government is being fully consulted before espousing any decision. It has rejected the claims that the President has been systematically sidelined in critical military and state decisions as controversial, baseless statements, rumour and false narrative.
However, this is not the maiden time that reports about rifts between the IRGC, theocracy and the President have surfaced. It is repeatedly said that IRGC has restricted and curtailed the Presidential powers, taken control of the administration and the Office of Iranian President has hit a deadlock. In an earlier report it was mentioned that President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian and the speaker of the Parliament Mohammad Bhager Ghalibaf had clashed with the hardline IRGC over policy issues. With the war escalating, peace talks stuck in gridlock and internal political faultlines steepening in Tehran peace is jeopardized and future geopolitical trajectory of West Asia remains ambiguous.
