Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that under India’s Chairmanship this year, BRICS will work together to strengthen multilateralism, promote sustainable development, enhance economic resilience and build a more inclusive world order. Interacting with Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation of BRICS countries who called on him in New Delhi, the Prime Minister said BRICS has emerged as an important platform for advancing cooperation among emerging economies and giving voice to the aspirations of the Global South.
The meetings took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which is currently underway in New Delhi under India’s 2026 chairship of the grouping.
Earlier, delivering his opening remarks at the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said that peace and security remain central to the global order. He said recent conflicts across regions only underline the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving international disputes and maintaining stability.
The BRICS meeting has brought together senior representatives from member countries, including Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, among others. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”
PM Modi holds separate talks with Iranian and Russian foreign ministers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday also held separate meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi. The meeting between PM Modi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi marks India’s first high-level diplomatic engagement with Tehran since the outbreak of the Iran conflict. Araghchi had arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday night to participate in the BRICS meeting amid heightened tensions in West Asia.
Later, Prime Minister Modi met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the latter’s visit to India for the two-day BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Lavrov briefed PM Modi on the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation since the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025. During the discussions, PM Modi and Lavrov exchanged views on several regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the ongoing situation in Ukraine and developments in West Asia.
The Prime Minister reiterated India’s consistent stand in favour of dialogue and diplomacy as the best way forward in addressing conflicts and geopolitical tensions. PM Modi also conveyed his warm greetings to Russian President Vladimir Putin through Foreign Minister Lavrov. India and Russia share a longstanding strategic partnership spanning defence, energy, trade, nuclear cooperation and multilateral engagement. The latest meeting comes amid continued diplomatic consultations between the two countries on regional security issues and broader global geopolitical developments.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, being held in New Delhi on May 14 and 15 under India’s 2026 chairmanship, continues to focus on diplomacy, multilateralism and Global South cooperation amid global economic and geopolitical challenges.
