Amid continuing political tension in West Bengal following the Assembly election results, another violent incident has surfaced from the North 24 Parganas district. A BJP worker identified as Rohit Roy, alias Chintu, was allegedly shot in the abdomen in Basirhat on Wednesday during a dispute over the placement of BJP flags in the locality.

The incident comes only hours after the killing of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath in Madhyamgram, adding to concerns over rising political violence in the state.

According to BJP sources, the firing took place in the Gotra area of Basirhat after an altercation broke out between BJP workers and alleged Trinamool Congress supporters regarding the installation of party flags in the locality. The BJP accused “TMC-sheltered miscreants” of carrying out the attack.

Rohit Roy was immediately rushed to the Basirhat state-run hospital after sustaining bullet injuries to his abdomen. Hospital sources stated that his condition was critical but stable.

A video circulated by the BJP’s media cell purportedly showed the injured Roy speaking from the hospital bed. In the video, he alleged that a group of around 8 to 10 TMC workers confronted them while they were putting up BJP flags in the area. Roy claimed that three persons from the group opened fire at him during the confrontation.

“Fight like tiger cubs,” said Mamata.

“I’ll not resign,” said Mamata.

Now look at what her Gunda Bahini is doing. Two more BJP workers have been attacked by TMC goons, one is dead and the other has sustained a bullet injury.

The latest incident has further intensified the political atmosphere in Bengal, where clashes and allegations of post-poll violence have repeatedly dominated headlines. BJP leaders have accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of targeting party workers after the elections, while the TMC has often denied such allegations and accused the BJP of politicising isolated incidents.

Earlier in the day, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath was shot dead in Madhyamgram, triggering sharp political reactions across the state. BJP leaders alleged that the attacks reflected a deteriorating law-and-order situation in West Bengal.

Police officials are yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the Basirhat firing incident or confirm the identities of the accused. An investigation into the matter is reportedly underway.

The Basirhat firing came just hours after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s close aide Chandranath Rath was shot dead in Madhyamgram late Wednesday night, further escalating concerns over post-poll violence in West Bengal. Rath, often described by BJP workers as Adhikari’s “shadow”, had reportedly spent the day in his native Chandipur village, urging party cadres to maintain peace and avoid retaliation despite sporadic clashes reported after the Assembly election results.

According to preliminary information, Rath was returning home in Madhyamgram when his Scorpio vehicle was allegedly intercepted around 200 metres from his residence. Multiple assailants arriving on motorcycles allegedly opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.

Police suspect the attack was pre-planned and believe at least eight helmeted attackers were involved. Rath sustained two bullet injuries to the chest and was declared brought dead at the hospital, while his driver Buddhadev Bera suffered multiple bullet injuries and underwent surgery. BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, rushed to the hospital soon after the incident.

West Bengal DGP Siddh Nath Gupta, on Suvendu Adhikari’s PA Chandra being shot dead, says, “We have started the investigation into the case.

Calling it a “cold-blooded murder”, Adhikari alleged that Rath had been deliberately targeted and demanded strict action against those responsible. Police are currently examining CCTV footage and investigating the role of a suspicious vehicle allegedly used during the attack.
