Kolkata: Techno City Police in Bidhannagar arrested five people, including TMC leader Kamal Mandal, in connection with the brutal murder of BJP leader Madhu Mandal on Tuesday. Police reportedly apprehended Kamal Mandal in the Kalyanpur border area of Bangaon, Gopalnagar, while he was attempting to flee to Bangladesh to evade arrest.

Madhu Mandal was allegedly beaten to death by Kamal Mandal and his associates in the New Town area of West Bengal during a victory rally held after the BJP’s win in the Rajarhat-New Town assembly seat. His body was later discovered lying in a muddy patch, with his family accusing TMC workers of being behind the killing.

The incident sparked widespread anger in the locality, with enraged villagers vandalising Kamal Mandal’s residence. Police were forced to use a baton charge to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control. Meanwhile, post-election violence appears to have resurfaced in the state soon after the assembly poll results.

Rath’s killing triggered strong reactions from party workers and supporters, who demanded immediate action and a thorough probe. Security was tightened in several sensitive areas following the murder, as concerns over targeted attacks on political affiliates grew.
