Early counting trends in the West Bengal Assembly elections suggest a major political shift, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the clear frontrunner. As counting continues across 293 seats, the party appears close to securing a majority. This would potentially bring an end to the long-standing rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state.
The latest trends from the West Bengal Assembly elections indicate a significant turning point in the state’s political landscape. According to early counting data, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has established a strong lead, advancing in approximately 177 out of 293 seats. In contrast, the ruling Trinamool Congress is trailing with around 107 seats.
These early numbers suggest more than just a lead; they reflect a potential shift in voter sentiment across West Bengal. If the trend continues, it could mark a historic breakthrough for the BJP in Eastern India and reshape the state’s political dynamics.
Rahul Sinha, former State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and a Rajya Sabha MP, asserted that the BJP is coming to power in the state. Speaking to reporters, MP Rahul Sinha stated, “For now, we will await the results; we will also ensure that our party workers return safely from the counting centres. However, rest assured the BJP is coming to power.”
Rahul Sinha added, “The party we are contesting against is a party of anti-social elements; therefore, we will keep a close watch on the safety of our workers who will remain present at the centers throughout the entire counting process. The TMC is on its way out, and the BJP is set to form the new government here.”
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is maintaining a comfortable lead, boosting morale among party workers. Another notable development is from the Panihati constituency, where Ratna Debnath, the mother of an RG Kar rape victim, is leading. Her performance is being seen as a reflection of public concern over justice and law-and-order issues, which have played a crucial role in this election.
Celebrations have already begun outside the BJP headquarters in Delhi, with supporters gathering in large numbers, beating drums and chanting slogans. The enthusiasm is not only driven by current trends but also by the party’s consistent efforts over the past few years to expand its organisational base in West Bengal.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP ran an aggressive and wide-reaching campaign. His rallies, particularly in regions like Jhargram, attracted large crowds. One widely discussed moment from the campaign was when Modi was seen enjoying the local street food ‘Jhalmuri,’ which resonated with voters as a symbol of simplicity and grassroots connection.
The BJP is currently leading in key constituencies such as Jhargram, Binpur, Gopiballavpur and Nayagram. Political observers believe that Modi’s direct outreach and emphasis on local engagement significantly influenced voter behaviour in these regions.
Interestingly, ‘Jhalmuri’, a popular street food in West Bengal, became a symbolic talking point during the campaign. When Modi shared images of himself eating it, it reinforced the party’s message of connecting with everyday citizens at the grassroots level.
The BJP’s campaign also focused heavily on issues such as alleged corruption, political violence, and law-and-order concerns under the TMC government. By highlighting these issues aggressively, the party positioned itself as a credible alternative to the incumbent administration.
In addition, central government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Ujjwala Yojana and Ayushman Bharat helped strengthen the BJP’s support among rural and economically weaker sections. There has also been a visible rise in support among women, youth and first-time voters, which is reflected in the early trends. However, the final results are yet to be declared. Re-polling in the Falta constituency is scheduled for May 21, which could have a minor impact on the final tally.
Despite this, the current trends clearly indicate that West Bengal’s political landscape is at a crucial juncture. If these numbers hold, it would mark a major political victory for the BJP and could redefine the balance of power in the state.
