West Bengal Results 2026: Justice wave? RG Kar victim’s mother Ratna Debnath lead by over 2,700 votes in Panihati

In a significant early trend from Panihati, BJP candidate Ratna Debnath has taken the lead, turning a deeply personal tragedy into a powerful electoral moment. The constituency has emerged as one of the most closely watched battlegrounds in the Bengal results

The Panihati Assembly constituency in North 24 Parganas is witnessing a dramatic electoral turn as Ratna Debnath, contesting on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket, has surged ahead in early counting trends.

According to data released by the Election Commission of India, Debnath is currently leading by a margin of more than 2,763 votes over her nearest rival from the All India Trinamool Congress.

Contest rooted in justice and public anger

Debnath’s candidature has drawn widespread attention due to her personal background. She is the mother of the postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in 2024, a case that sparked nationwide outrage.

Her campaign has centred on justice for her daughter, women’s safety, and accountability, striking a chord with voters in the constituency.

The early lead is being seen by political observers as a reflection of public sentiment around these issues, particularly in urban and semi-urban pockets like Panihati.

High-stakes battle against TMC candidate

Debnath is facing Tirthankar Ghosh of the TMC, making the contest a direct face-off between the BJP and the ruling party.

The seat had already been under intense scrutiny due to its emotional and political significance, and the current trend has further heightened interest in the final outcome.

Panihati has come to symbolise a larger political narrative in West Bengal, where issues of law and order, governance, and women’s safety have dominated the election discourse.

Debnath’s lead, though part of early trends, is being closely tracked as counting continues. With multiple rounds still to go, the final result remains open, but the initial momentum has clearly placed the BJP candidate in a strong position.

Counting continues amid high expectations

As counting progresses across the state, the Panihati result is expected to be a key indicator of voter mood in urban constituencies.

Whether Ratna Debnath can maintain and expand her lead will become clearer in the coming rounds, but for now, her advantage marks one of the most significant early developments in the West Bengal Results 2026.
