Florida/New Delhi: The long-running political confrontation between Donald Trump and Pro-Islamist and scandalous Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has intensified once again, with both figures exchanging sharp personal and political attacks. The latest episode unfolded during Trump’s remarks in Florida, followed by Omar’s fierce rebuttal on social media.
Trump’s Florida remarks target Omar and Somalia
Speaking at The Villages in Florida, US President Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on pro-islamist Ilhan Omar, the Democratic Representative from Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, referring to her as a “phoney”. His speech went beyond political criticism, extending to remarks about Somalia, Omar’s country of birth.
Trump described Somalia in stark and highly critical terms, stating: “Somalia, it’s a beautiful place. It’s got no government, it’s got no military, it’s got no anything. It’s got one thing that’s really strong crime. It’s got a lot of crime. They have no police. All they do is run around shooting each other. It’s filthy, dirty, disgusting, dirty. It’s a horrible place”.
Turning directly to Islamist Omar, Trump criticised her role in American politics, saying: “Ilhan Omar… comes here from Somalia, and she tells us how to run the United States of America. She says, ‘The Constitution gives me certain rights… and I demand that I be given these rights.’ Get the hell out. What a phoney”.
He further escalated his rhetoric by repeating an allegation that has circulated in political discourse, stating: “I believe she married her brother, which is totally illegal… Isn’t she despicable?”
These remarks marked one of Trump’s most personal attacks on Omar in recent months, blending criticism of her political positions with commentary on her background.
Omar’s Retort: Legal accusations and personal counterattack
Ilhan Omar responded swiftly on X, rejecting Trump’s statements and launching a counterattack focused on his legal and personal controversies. She wrote: “This unhinged rant would solicit anger if it wasn’t coming from a criminal, who has 34 felony convictions, held accountable for rape and accused of being a pedo. I still don’t know how anyone would willingly humiliate themselves like this but here we are”.
Her remarks referenced Trump’s legal troubles, though the characterisations remain part of ongoing political disputes and interpretations of court outcomes. Omar further added: “Btw, the pedophile protection party should find new material for their deflection”.
This confrontation is not an isolated incident but part of a sustained feud between the two figures. In September 2025, Omar had launched a similarly sharp attack on Trump after he claimed to have spoken with Somalia’s president about deporting her. Responding to that claim, Omar wrote: “From denying Somalia had a president to making up a story, President Trump is a lying buffoon. No one should take this embarrassing fool seriously”.
Trump had earlier stated during remarks at the Oval Office: “You know, I met the head of Somalia… And I suggested that maybe he’d like to take her back. And he said, ‘I don’t want her’. ”In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump criticised Somalia’s conditions in detail, citing issues such as lack of central government control, poverty, hunger, terrorism, piracy, civil war, corruption, and violence. He claimed that 70 per cent of Somalia’s population lives in extreme poverty and described the country as among the most corrupt globally.
He then linked these conditions to Omar’s political stance, writing: “All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! P.S. Wasn’t she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship???” He concluded that post with a harsh remark: “What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do and how to do it.” Born in Somalia, Ilhan Omar fled the country’s civil war at the age of eight. Her family spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before immigrating to the United States in the 1990s. By 1997, they had settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Ilhan Omar’s anti-India-positions and controversies
Beyond US domestic politics, Ilhan Omar has drawn significant attention and criticism in India for her positions on key issues. In 2019, she criticised the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, describing it as part of what she termed a “Hindu nationalism project” led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She has also been openly critical of the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. In April 2022, Omar visited Pakistan and met with then Prime Minister Imran Khan. During that trip, she also travelled to Pakistan-Occupied Jammu & Kashmir(POJK), a move that drew strong condemnation from India.
On April 6, 2022, Omar delivered a speech in the US House of Representatives highlighting what she described as the “plight” of Muslims in India. Her remarks included allegations of mistreatment of minorities under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Critics in India rejected her claims, arguing that they were based on selective narratives and politically motivated interpretations.
Omar also introduced a resolution in June 2022 calling on the US Secretary of State to designate India as a “country of particular concern”. The resolution was co-sponsored by Congresspersons Rashida Tlaib, Juan Vargas, and Jim McGovern. The resolution cited alleged targeting of Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Adivasis, and other minorities, and echoed recommendations from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom based on fabricated data. The development was reportedly highlighted in advance by a senior official from Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
In June 2023, Omar boycotted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the US Congress. Later, in September 2023, she called for full US support for Canada’s investigation into India’s alleged role in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Rahul Gandhi meeting sparks political backlash
Omar’s engagement with Indian political figures also became a point of controversy in 2024. In September that year, Rahul Gandhi met Ilhan Omar at the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C., during his visit to the United States. The meeting triggered sharp criticism from leaders of the BJP.
BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi said: “Rahul Gandhi is known for spewing anti-India venom, but what he has done this time is concerning. He became the first Leader of the Opposition to meet US MP Ilhan Omar, who is infamous for taking anti-India stand”. He added that “He has further added another feather to the cap of his anti-India friends… Rahul Gandhi is not acting childishly, but dangerously. He is now doing what anti-India elements would love”.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla also criticised the meeting, asking: “Why did Rahul Gandhi have to meet her? Why is he engaging with the most radical anti-India elements on every foreign trip?” Similarly, BJP leader Amit Malviya condemned the interaction, stating: “Even Pakistani leaders would be more circumspect about being seen with such rabid elements. Congress is now openly working against India”.
