Railway land encroachment by Islamists cleared in Uttarakhand: Illegal ‘Mazar’ removed in joint action

A joint enforcement operation by district authorities and railway officials led to the removal of an alleged illegal encroachment on railway land by Islamists in Uttarakhand’s Udham Singh Nagar. The action, carried out along the Kichha–Pantnagar rail section, followed multiple notices issued over the past few years and was executed under tight security to ensure law and order

DEHRADUN: On April 25, 2026, illegal encroachment in the form of a mazar constructed on railway land between level crossing numbers 41/C and 42/C on the Kichha–Pantnagar rail section (Gram Panchayat Khurpia), under Tehsil/Police Station Kichha in Udham Singh Nagar district, was removed.

In this regard, a letter addressed to the District Magistrate of Udham Singh Nagar was issued by the Office of the Assistant Divisional Engineer (Line), Izzatnagar (Letter No. I/212/Encroachment/41 dated April 22, 2026). It stated that a mazar (Beni Mazar) was located on the left side between Kichha and Pantnagar on railway land. The site lies at the junction of Railway and PWD boundaries.

As part of a joint action plan by both departments to remove illegal encroachments, the Railway Department had earlier issued notices on May 30, 2023, May 26, 2023, and September 18, 2025, asking for the voluntary removal of the structure. However, despite these notices, the mazar management did not remove the encroachment from railway land.

Subsequently, April 25, 2026, was fixed as the date for removal of the encroachment. Acting on the directions of District Magistrate Nitin Singh Bhadauria, necessary support was extended to the Railway Department.

Senior officials present at the site included Additional District Magistrate (Nazul & Administration) Pankaj Upadhyay, Additional District Magistrate (Finance & Revenue) Kaustubh Mishra, SP City Uttam Singh Negi, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Kichha Gaurav Pandey, Circle Officers Bhupendra Singh Dhauni and Prashant Kumar, Tehsildar Kichha Girish Chandra Tripathi, Station House Officers of Kichha and Pantnagar, along with officials and staff from the Revenue Department, Police Department, Railways, PWD, RPF, and other concerned departments.

The illegal encroachment was removed peacefully through coordinated action. Adequate police force was deployed at the site to maintain law and order.
