Asha Bhosle, one of the most iconic and versatile voices in Bharatiya music history, passed away on April 12, leaving behind a legacy that shaped the soundscape of Bharatiya cinema and music for over eight decades. She was 92 years old.

Born in 1933, Asha Bhosle began her musical journey at a young age, rising to prominence in the 1950s and eventually becoming one of the most celebrated playback singers in the world. Her voice was playful, emotive and endlessly adaptable that was coonected to generations of music lovers across the globe. Over the course of her extraordinary career, Bhosle recorded thousands of songs in multiple Bharatiya languages, lending her voice to a wide range of genres from classical and ghazals to cabaret, pop and folk.

Her collaborations with leading composers and filmmakers produced some of the most memorable songs in Hindi cinema, making her an enduring cultural icon. Her achievements were recognised with numerous honours, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan, Bharat’s second-highest civilian award. In 2011, she was acknowledged by the Guinness World Records as the most-recorded artist in music history. Even in her later years, she remained connected to music, performing occasionally and inspiring younger generations of artists. Her influence extended far beyond playback singing, shaping trends and redefining the role of a female voice in Bharatiya music. Her legendary versatility spanning soulful ghazals like Dil Cheez Kya Hai to sultry hits like Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, shining mastery in the haunting Mera Kuchh Saaman and the playful Chura Liya Hai Tumne, from folk-inspired melodies to pop, her voice remains Bharat’s ultimate musical kaleidoscope.

“Service activities succeed only when carried out with selflessness and sincerity. True service arises from a sense of belonging, and it is this feeling that sustains goodness in society even today. Society too should participate in such service efforts to the best of its ability. Service performed thus with selflessness and a sense of belonging is indeed true dharma,” appealed Dr Mohan Bhagwat, RSS Sarsanghchalak at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the ‘Lata–Asha Mangeshkar Institute of Medical Sciences’ at Nandoshi (Pune) on April 16

 Nation mourns colossal loss

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other leaders mourned the demise of the legendary playback singer. In a heartfelt message on the social media platform X, PM Modi expressed, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji, one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known. Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world. Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance. I’ll always cherish the interactions I’ve had with her. My condolences to her family, admirers and music lovers. She will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever echo in people’s lives.”

Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tributes to the legendary singer on X stating, “Today is a sorrowful day for every Indian and especially for every music lover like me, as our beloved Asha Bhosle ji is no longer among us. Asha Tai not only carved out a unique identity with her sweet voice and unparalleled talent, but also enriched Indian music further through her melodies. Her extraordinary ability to adapt to every genre of music won over every heart. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described demise of Asha Bhosle ji as an irreplaceable loss for the music world. Terming her passing as “extremely heartbreaking” and an “irreplaceable loss to the world of art”, Uttar Pradesh CM, Yogi Adityanath, said. “The demise of the melody empress of the Indian music world, the great maestro of notes, ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Asha Bhosle ji, is extremely heartbreaking and an irreplaceable loss to the world of art. Her unparalleled singing bestowed new heights upon Indian music. Her sweet melodies will forever resonate in the hearts of the nation’s people. I pray to Lord Sri Ram that the departed noble soul attains eternal peace, and that the bereaved family and admirers are granted the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!”.

Singer Shankar Mahadevan described Asha Bhosle as an embodiment of Maa Saraswati who had a profound influence on his musical journey.
