Reflecting the incredible cultural and historical significance of India to the world and as a symbol of spreading Swami Vivekananda’s message and philosophy across the globe, the first-ever life size statue of Swami Vivekananda was unveiled in Seattle, United States. The inauguration of the statue is considered as a great honour to the spiritual and philosophical leader who propagated the message of peace, unity and universal brotherhood beyond oceans.

The life-size bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda was unleashed at the busy Westlake Square in downtown Seattle. This is the first such installation hosted by the city government in the United States. The sculpture of Swami Vivekananda is carved by Indian artist Naresh Kumar Kumawat. On April 11, Saturday(as per the US timings) in the presence of Seattle Mayor Mayor Katie Wilson and Consul General of India in Seattle Prakash Gupta, the statue of Swami Vivekananda was unleashed.

On the X social media platform, the Consulate General of India in Seattle wrote, “From Chicago 1893 to Seattle 2026! Seattle’s skyline has a new Indian icon: Swami Vivekananda! The City of Seattle became the first city government to host the Swami Vivekananda Monument in the heart of downtown Seattle”. The statue of Swami Vivekananda was gifted by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations(ICCR) to the city of Seattle.

The statue also symbolises rich multicultural character and the spirit of inclusivity of the city of Seattle, said Mayor of Seattle Katie Wilson post the unveiling of the statue. The statue of Swami Vivekananda strengthens cultural and diplomatic ties between India and other overseas cities which are metropolitan in nature and resonate inclusiveness, the Mayor of Seattle further added. The unveiling of the statue was held on the occasion of the ICCR Day. Members of the India-American diaspora were also present during the unveiling event.

The unleashing of the statue of Swami Vivekananda is a part of India’s broader cultural diplomacy with the aim of consolidating people-to-people ties. Westlake is an extremely busy and vibrant city that attracts 4,00,000 visitors per day. The monument stands at prime location which houses Amazon headquarters, Seattle Convention Centre etc. Thus, the Swami Vivekananda statue being located at this region acts as a cornerstone to convey India’s soft power potential and civilisational spirit.
