New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other leaders on April 12, Sunday mourned the demise of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, remembering her as one of India’s most iconic and versatile voices whose music enriched the country’s cultural heritage for over eight decades.
In a heartfelt message on the X social media platform, Prime Minister Modi expressed deep sorrow, calling Bhosle “one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known”. PM Modi credited her extraordinary musical journey spanning decades for enriching India’s cultural heritage and said her songs would continue to inspire generations. “Her voice carried timeless brilliance”, he wrote, adding that he would always cherish his personal interactions with the singer. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Asha Bhosle Ji, one of the most iconic and versatile voices India has ever known. Her extraordinary musical journey, spanning decades, enriched our cultural heritage and touched countless hearts across the world. Be it her soulful melodies or vibrant compositions, her voice carried timeless brilliance. I’ll always cherish the interactions I’ve had with her. My condolences to her family, admirers and music lovers. She will continue to inspire generations and her songs will forever echo in people’s lives”, PM Modi wrote.

Meanwhile Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tributes to the legendary singer. Taking to his X social media platform Amit Shah wrote, “Today is a sorrowful day for every Indian and especially for every music lover like me, as our beloved Asha Bhosle ji is no longer among us. Asha Tai not only carved out a unique identity with her sweet voice and unparalleled talent, but also enriched Indian music further through her melodies. Her extraordinary ability to adapt to every genre of music won over every heart. Asha ji, who touched millions of hearts with her voice, left an indelible mark not just in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati, and many other languages, but also in folk songs. Asha Tai’s voice held as much tenderness as her demeanor did simplicity and warmth. Whenever I met her, we would have long conversations on topics like music and art. Though she may not be with us today, through her voice, she will forever remain in our hearts. May God grant Asha ji a place at His divine feet. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute on his X handle, describing Bhosle as India’s “melody queen” whose songs were cherished across generations. Calling her death an “irreplaceable loss” to the music world, he extended condolences to her family and admirers, concluding his message with “Om Shanti”. “The passing of India’s melody queen, Asha Bhosle ji, is extremely painful for me. As a playback singer, she lent her voice to thousands of films and music albums. Generations of Indians have listened to and hummed her songs. The echo of her sweet melodies will resonate forever. The demise of Asha Bhosle ji is an irreplaceable loss for the music world. In this hour of grief, my condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti!”, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh wrote.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath termed her passing as “extremely heartbreaking” and an “irreplaceable loss to the world of art”. In his tribute posted on his X handle, he highlighted her unparalleled contribution to Indian music and prayed for eternal peace for her soul. “The demise of the melody empress of the Indian music world, the great maestro of notes, ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Asha Bhosle ji, is extremely heartbreaking and an irreplaceable loss to the world of art. Her unparalleled singing bestowed new heights upon Indian music. Her sweet melodies will forever resonate in the hearts of the nation’s people. I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed noble soul attains eternal peace, and that the bereaved family and admirers are granted the strength to bear this immense sorrow. Om Shanti!”, Yogi Adityanath expressed his grief.

Meanwhile, Singer Shankar Mahadevan described Asha Bhosle as an embodiment of Maa Saraswathi who had a profound influence on his musical journey. In a video message, Mahadevan said, “A very sad day for all of us and a very sad day for Indian music. I cannot believe that our dearest Asha Tayi is no more. I am not able to express my sorrow and what I am feeling right now, as a musician, as didi’s worshipper, as a very close family friend and looking up to her like Maa Saraswati”.
Describing her musical legacy as immortal, he added, “I am sure that every single Indian is heartbroken. But didi and her music will never ever perish from the face of the earth till humans exist. Because her contribution cannot be described in words. She is somebody who is going to live forever and going to be there on our phone, on TV, on every single medium where music plays. She is going to be there with us, with her amazing voice resounding all over the planet. At this moment, we are all grief-stricken; we are all heartbroken. Let’s all pray that she is in a better place and keeps blessing us and sending us her positive and enthusiastic energy that she used to always share with us”.
Bhosle, 92, passed away at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai due to multi-organ failure. She had been admitted a day earlier following extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. As one of the most celebrated voices in Indian music history, Asha Bhosle, leaves behind a monumental legacy that shaped the soundscape of Indian cinema for over eight decades. Over the course of her career, she recorded thousands of songs in multiple languages, earning multiple Filmfare Awards, National Film Awards and global recognition for her versatility across genres. Born in 1933, Bhosle began her musical journey at a young age and rose to prominence in the 1950s. Her voice was playful, emotive and adaptable, thus became synonymous with generations of film music.
