LUCKNOW: To strengthen agricultural education and promote sustainable development, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has approved the establishment of a new Forestry and Horticulture University in Gorakhpur. The decision is another major step in the state government’s efforts to expand higher education infrastructure while focusing on specialised sectors like forestry, horticulture, and environmental conservation. According to official details, the proposed university will be developed in the Campierganj region of Gorakhpur district. The project will be set up over approximately 50 hectares of land and will involve an investment of more than Rs 491 crore.

The upcoming university will primarily focus on forestry and horticulture; two areas that are increasingly gaining importance in the context of climate change, food security, and sustainable livelihoods. By offering specialised courses, research opportunities, and modern training facilities, the institution will help students prepare for emerging challenges in agriculture and allied sectors.

Such institutions play a vital role in improving productivity, conserving natural resources, and promoting eco-friendly practices. Forestry education, for instance, contributes to better forest management, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience. Similarly, horticulture has the potential to enhance farmers’ incomes through high-value crops such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, and medicinal plants.

The decision to set up the university in Gorakhpur is also seen as a strategic move to promote balanced regional development. Uttar Pradesh has long required more educational and research institutions to support its growing population and agricultural economy. The establishment of this university is expected to generate employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. Local youth will benefit from direct and indirect job creation, while students from nearby districts will gain access to quality higher education without having to migrate to distant cities. Moreover, the presence of a specialised university is likely to attract investments, research collaborations, and academic partnerships, further contributing to the region’s economic growth.

The university is planned to be developed as a modern educational hub equipped with advanced infrastructure. It will include academic buildings, laboratories, research centres, libraries, hostels, and administrative offices. Special emphasis is expected on practical learning, fieldwork, and hands-on training. Students will likely have access to experimental farms, nurseries, and demonstration units where they can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. This approach aligns with the government’s vision of promoting skill-based education that enhances employability.

Alignment with Government Policies

The approval of the Forestry and Horticulture University aligns with the broader vision of the Uttar Pradesh government to strengthen the education sector and promote innovation-driven growth. Over the past few years, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed the establishment of several universities and institutions which aim to improve access to higher education. The focus on agriculture and allied sectors is particularly important, as a large portion of the state’s population depends on farming for their livelihood. By investing in education and research, the government aims to modernise agricultural practices, increase productivity, and improve farmers’ income.

Apart from educational and economic benefits, the university will also play a crucial role in addressing environmental challenges. With increasing concerns about deforestation, soil degradation, and climate change, there is a growing need for trained professionals to develop sustainable solutions. The institution is expected to promote awareness about environmental conservation and encourage research in areas such as afforestation, water management, organic farming, and biodiversity protection. This will not only benefit the state but also contribute to national and global sustainability goals.

The new university will open up a wide range of opportunities for students interested in agriculture, environmental science, and related fields. Courses may include forestry management, horticultural science, landscape design, plant breeding, and agro-technology. Research scholars and scientists will also benefit from the availability of dedicated facilities and funding support. Collaborative projects with national and international institutions could further enhance the quality of research and innovation.

The establishment of the Forestry and Horticulture University is expected to have a long-term positive impact on the state’s agricultural ecosystem. By producing skilled professionals and promoting research, the institution will contribute to improving farming practices, increasing crop yields, and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources. In addition, it will help bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern technology, enabling farmers to adopt innovative methods that enhance productivity and profitability. Such initiatives by the UP government are expected to play a crucial role in shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future.
