Goregaon: A violent clash broke out between two groups in Mumbai’s Goregaon (Dindoshi area) on the night of April 5, leaving several people injured after a group of Islamic youths allegedly attacked Hindu devotees participating in a religious procession. The confrontation is said to have been triggered by objections to bhajans and religious chants during the procession. Police intervened promptly, dispersing the crowd and arresting eight individuals by midnight.

The incident took place in the Santosh Nagar Market area during a Mariam Mata Shobha Yatra. According to reports, tensions escalated after some individuals objected to the procession, which led to vandalism of a pandal and assaults on participants, including members of the Bajrang Dal. Eyewitnesses also claimed that provocative slogans were raised during the altercation, further intensifying the situation.

Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and quickly brought the situation under control. Using CCTV footage, they identified the accused and made swift arrests. As the violence escalated, a mild lathi charge was carried out to disperse the crowd. Three Bajrang Dal workers were reportedly injured and are currently undergoing treatment at a trauma care hospital in Jogeshwari.

In a follow-up action, authorities found that several accused were allegedly residing in illegal constructions. Acting on prior complaints, the municipal body initiated a demolition drive on Monday morning under heavy police security. Bulldozers were deployed to remove unauthorised encroachments, with officials stating that the move is part of ongoing efforts to reclaim public spaces and enforce civic laws.

After the incident, a heavy police deployment has turned the Santosh Nagar area into a high-security zone. Although the situation is presently under control, tensions continue to linger, and investigations are ongoing. So far, eight individuals have been arrested, and efforts are underway to apprehend others involved.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Kirit Somaiya is expected to visit the site and take part in a Hanuman Chalisa recitation later today. His proposed visit comes amid heightened tensions following the clash and subsequent action against illegal structures. Authorities remain on alert to prevent any further escalation.
