The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the recent unrest in Malda, where protests spiralled into a major law-and-order situation, disrupting normal life and raising serious concerns over governance in the poll-bound state.
The unrest in Malda was marked by large-scale protests, road blockades, and disruption of key highway corridors. The situation escalated to such an extent that members of the judiciary were reportedly stranded amid the blockade and had to be escorted to safety late at night.
Despite the immediate clearance of the blockade, tensions persisted, with authorities continuing to monitor the situation amid fears of further escalation.
What has particularly caught investigators’ attention is the speed and scale at which protests erupted across multiple locations, suggesting a level of coordination beyond spontaneous public outrage.
According to reports, the NIA’s preliminary findings point toward the possibility that the protests were pre-planned and strategically coordinated.
Investigators have already questioned several individuals and conducted on-ground assessments to piece together a timeline of events. The near-simultaneous emergence of protests at different locations has strengthened suspicions of organised mobilisation.
Officials are now examining communication patterns, possible networks involved, and the larger motive behind the unrest.
Apart from the planning angle, the probe is also focusing on the response of the local administration. Early indications suggest there may have been delays in addressing the situation, which could have contributed to the escalation.
The role of district authorities, including the District Magistrate (DM) and Superintendent of Police (SP), is being closely examined to determine whether timely intervention could have prevented the situation from spiralling.
In a significant development, an audio clip has surfaced that may provide further leads in the investigation, although its authenticity has not yet been independently verified.
In the purported recording, a police officer is allegedly heard asking an individual identified as Mofakkural to engage with protesters in Jadupur to help ease movement. The individual is also heard claiming that he had given a four-day ultimatum to authorities, warning of renewed protests if demands were not met.
Investigators are expected to analyse the clip to establish its authenticity and context as part of the ongoing probe.
At this stage, the NIA is concentrating on three key aspects:
1. Whether the protests were pre-planned and coordinated
2. Identification of individuals and groups involved
3. The underlying motive behind the unrest
Officials are also reconstructing the sequence of events to fix accountability and identify any systemic failures.
The NIA is continuing its probe and is expected to submit a preliminary report in the coming days. Authorities have indicated that all angles, including planning, execution, and administrative response are being thoroughly examined.
