“He is the key organiser of the Kaliachak incident, during which seven judicial officers were gheraoed inside the block office for several hours on Wednesday night. He was trying to escape the state,” the officer said. ADG (North Bengal) K. Jayaraman added that Mofakkarul Islam hails from Itahar in Uttar Dinajpur district and was residing in Kolkata at the time of his arrest.

Three cases have been lodged against Mofakkarul Islam at Kaliachak police station for allegedly instigating locals through speeches on Wednesday, which reportedly triggered the gherao of judicial officers inside the Kaliachak-2 block office under the Mothabari assembly constituency.
“We began tracking him immediately after the incident, and with assistance from the West Bengal CID and Siliguri Police, we apprehended him and his associate at Bagdogra Airport. Three separate cases were registered for inciting locals at different locations,” the officer said, adding that a total of 19 cases have been lodged in connection with the Kaliachak episode.
While the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the primary investigation, the West Bengal Police will continue probing to determine whether the incident was pre-planned and if more individuals were involved. So far, a total of 35 people, including a candidate from the Indian Secular Front (ISF), have been arrested.
Questions Around Motive
Mofakkarul Islam, whose name also appears in the West Bengal voter list, has been photographed with prominent TMC leaders, including Kalyan Banerjee, raising questions about his political affiliations. Authorities are yet to clarify the reasons behind this audacious move. The incident has drawn widespread attention and scrutiny, highlighting concerns over law and order, political influence, and the safety of judicial officers in the region.
