Hubballi: A tense situation prevailed in parts of Hubballi after an interfaith relationship between a Muslim man and a Hindu girl escalated into violent clashes between two families, triggering allegations of “love jihad” by certain groups and leading to multiple injuries. Police have stepped in to control the situation, even as conflicting claims from both sides have added to the complexity of the case.

According to initial information, the incident revolves around a relationship between Sameer, a gym trainer from Vijayanagar and a young woman from Vikas Nagar. The two reportedly met at a local gym and gradually developed a close relationship over the past few years. However, tensions began after the woman’s family came to know about the relationship and strongly objected to it.

The situation took a serious turn when members of some Hindu organisations intervened, alleging that the relationship was not consensual but part of a larger “love jihad” conspiracy. Acting on these allegations, activists reportedly confronted Sameer and later handed him over to the Old Hubballi Police Station for further inquiry.

Soon after, tensions between the two families spiralled into violence. According to one version, members of Sameer’s family allegedly entered the woman’s residence in Vikas Nagar and assaulted her relatives, leaving several injured. In retaliation, members of the woman’s family are said to have gone to Sameer’s house, leading to a counter-attack. The clashes resulted in injuries on both sides, with the victims being shifted to KIMS Hospital Hubballi for treatment.

Police officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Hubballi Police Commissioner N Shashikumar visited the hospital and interacted with the injured. He stated that both sides were involved in the altercation and that the exact sequence of events is still being verified. “Each family has accused the other of initiating the attack. As of now, no formal complaint has been filed. We have urged both parties to approach the matter legally”, he said.

The incident also sparked protests, with members of Hindu organisations staging demonstrations outside the police station, demanding strict action against the gym trainer. Protesters alleged that such cases are increasing and called for a deeper probe into whether organised attempts are being made to target young women through social spaces like gyms.

Meanwhile, both families have levelled serious allegations against each other. Sameer’s sister claimed that the relationship between the two was consensual and had been ongoing for nearly three years. She alleged that her brother was abducted and assaulted by members of the woman’s community. According to her, the two families had previously shared cordial relations, even socialising together on several occasions.

On the other hand, the woman’s mother Rajeshwari has made grave accusations, claiming that Sameer had manipulated and influenced her daughter. She alleged that her daughter was subjected to coercion and blackmail, and further claimed that substances may have been used to control her. The family also alleged that they were attacked with weapons when they resisted.

Given the sensitive nature of the case, police have tightened security in the area to prevent any further escalation. Additional forces have been deployed and officials are closely monitoring the situation. Investigations are currently underway to examine all aspects, including the nature of the relationship, the allegations made by both families and the circumstances that led to the violence. Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information.
