The Assam Legislative Assembly elections will be held on April 9, 2026. The Election Commission of Bharat has decided to conduct the elections in Assam in a single phase this time. Elections are generally conducted in multiple phases when a State is large, has a high population or difficult terrain, when there is inadequate availability of Government officials and staff for election duties or due to other important factors such as concerns related to law and order.
Since our State had long been affected by insurgency-related challenges, Assembly elections in Assam were earlier held in multiple phases primarily due to law and order considerations. However, as a result of the sincere and determined efforts of the BJP-led NDA Government in bringing insurgent groups into the mainstream and establishing lasting peace through dialogue, there is now no atmosphere of concern regarding the law and order situation in Assam.
Six Historic Peace Accords
In the past five years, six historic peace accords have been signed in Assam with a total of 15 insurgent groups. These include agreements with Karbi, Adivasi, Dimasa, Kuki and Hmar insurgent groups, as well as the pro-talks faction of ULFA. Through sustained dialogue and agreements, the BJP-led NDA Government has successfully brought youth involved in separatist movements back into the mainstream, resulting in a prevailing atmosphere of peace across the State. The ongoing development in Assam, along with transparent and merit-based recruitment and a renewed emphasis on cultural and sporting activities, has led to a positive transformation in the mindset of the younger generation. The earlier culture of agitations and bandhs has been effectively eliminated. The cloud of uncertainty and despair that once overshadowed the State has now lifted. It is this transformation, marked by peace, stability and a positive environment, that has made it possible to conduct elections in Assam in a single phase today. On May 10, 2021, we assumed the responsibility of governance. Since then, with the blessings and support of the people, the BJP-led NDA Government has made unprecedented progress towards ensuring security, development and self-reliance in Assam. With a firm commitment towards safeguarding Assam’s civilisation, culture and the self-respect of its indigenous people, the Government has taken several decisive and uncompromising steps that were once beyond imagination. At a time when indigenous Hindu communities have become minorities in as many as 12 districts of Assam, we have earnestly worked to fulfil our commitment of protecting our jati, mati and bheti.
Encroachment by Infiltrators
A matter of serious concern has been that nearly 65 lakh bighas of land in Assam are under encroachment, a significant portion of which is occupied by illegal immigrants. Our Government has already freed approximately 1.5 lakh bighas of land from encroachment. Going forward, we have set a target to reclaim at least 5 lakh bighas of land after forming the Government again.
Even the sacred birthplace of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev at Bordowa, which laid the foundation of Assamese cultural identity, had not been spared by the encroachers. Today, the area has been developed into a world-class cultural and spiritual tourism centre as Srimanta Sankardev Avirbhav Kshetra.
Dignity to Martyrs
In honour of the 860 martyrs of the historic Assam Movement, a grand Martyrs’ Memorial has been constructed over more than 150 bighas of land, ensuring that their sacrifice is remembered with due dignity. Further, the one-horned rhinoceros, an enduring symbol of Assam’s identity, is now fully protected within the State’s sanctuaries. We have made determined efforts to build a new, developed Assam—one that can stand on par with the most advanced States of the country in terms of infrastructure, investment and economic growth. A new chapter of development is being written through major initiatives such as improved healthcare and high-quality medical education, including the establishment of the first AIIMS in the North East; the construction of five new bridges over the Brahmaputra; the new terminal at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati; and extensive flood and erosion control measures, including 700 kilometres of new embankments and 43 sluice gates, aimed at making Assam flood-free and erosion-free. Further, transformative infrastructure projects such as the proposed Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, designed to ensure wildlife protection and smooth connectivity, along with the Guwahati Ring Road, 167 KM Guwahati Silchar High Speed Corridor and roads and bridges under the Asom Mala initiative, present a hopeful and progressive vision of a developed Assam.
Over the past five years, Assam has witnessed an unprecedented investment environment. Landmark initiatives such as the country’s first semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) facility at Jagiroad, the expansion of the Numaligarh Refinery and India’s first bamboo-based 2G bio-ethanol project, which will play a key role in green energy, reflect this transformation. Further, steps towards establishing the fourth unit of the Namrup fertilizer plant and the remarkable success of Advantage Assam 2.0 have significantly strengthened Assam’s industrial and investment landscape. These developments are turning the vision of Atmanirbhar Assam into a reality.
This is a golden phase in Assam’s history, a time that the present generation has not witnessed before in the State’s social life. We must preserve this moment and build upon it. More importantly, we must strengthen and extend this golden chapter of security, development and self-reliance. In this context, April 9 is a decisive day for Assam. On that day, the people of the State will exercise their franchise and have the opportunity to further strengthen and carry forward this golden journey of progress and stability. I appeal to all those who love Assam to make the most of this historic opportunity. On that day, I urge every citizen, men and women, youth and students alike to exercise their right to vote and play a decisive role in shaping the bright future of the State.
I have full confidence that the people of Assam will rise to this rare and significant national responsibility and discharge it with sincerity. With deep conviction, the BJP and its NDA partners stand ready to shoulder the responsibility that the people choose to entrust upon them. We are ready to participate in the upcoming election with deep commitment to building an Assam, which is Atal, Avichal and Agragami.
