BENGALURU: A serious case of alleged misconduct by a faculty member has come to light from a medical college in Nelamangala taluk, near Bengaluru, where a professor identified as Abdul has been accused of crossing professional boundaries by proposing to a student during an ongoing class. The incident has triggered widespread outrage among students and raised concerns over safety and ethics within educational institutions.

According to accounts shared by students, the incident unfolded inside a classroom while lectures were in progress. The professor allegedly distributed chocolates among students and then singled out a female student, publicly expressing his feelings and proposing to her in front of the entire class. The act has been widely condemned by students as inappropriate, embarrassing, and a clear violation of academic decorum.

Eyewitnesses stated that the student immediately objected to the professor’s behaviour and confronted him in the classroom. She reportedly questioned his intent and asserted that such actions were unacceptable in a professional learning environment. The confrontation escalated when the student, angered and humiliated by the alleged proposal, reportedly hit the professor with her slipper, reflecting the intensity of the situation.

The incident quickly escalated beyond the classroom. As information spread across the campus, a large number of students gathered and expressed anger over what they described as an abuse of authority. Several students allegedly chased Abdul and physically confronted him near the parking area, accusing him of violating the dignity, privacy, and trust of a student.

Sources said the professor managed to escape from the spot amid the chaos and fled the campus. The matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Nelamangala Rural Police Station, where further inquiry is expected. Police are likely to record statements from students, faculty members, and college authorities as part of the investigation.

A purported conversation between the professor and the student has further intensified the controversy. Students present during the incident claimed that the professor openly declared his affection, stating that he could not resist expressing his feelings and saying “I love you” while distributing chocolates. Such conduct, students argue, reflects a serious breach of professional ethics and misuse of a position of authority.

The student, however, firmly rejected the proposal and maintained her stand. She reportedly asked the professor to raise the matter with the college principal, stating that the entire batch would accompany her. She also denied any prior interaction or encouragement, countering the professor’s claim that she had previously proposed to him, and demanded evidence, including CCTV footage.

Despite the student’s clear refusal, the professor allegedly attempted to continue the conversation, stating he would speak to her the following day. The student, however, made it explicit that she had no interest in engaging further, a response that resonated with many students who later rallied against the professor.

The incident has sparked a broader debate about educators’ responsibilities and the need to maintain strict professional boundaries on campuses. Students have demanded immediate action against Abdul, including suspension and a thorough investigation to ensure accountability.

As of now, the college administration has not issued an official statement, drawing criticism from students who are seeking transparency and swift disciplinary measures. The lack of immediate response has only added to the tension on campus.
