Guwahati: Just ahead of the assembly polls, Congress party has experienced a big blow as its MP from Nagaon and senior leader Pradyut Bordoloi joins Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP). Pradyut Bordoloi who was a three terms minister during the Congress regime from 2001 to 20016 and two terms MP from Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency quit the party on March 17 and joins BJP today in New Delhi in the presence of CM Himanata Biswa Sarma and State President Dilip Saikia.

As CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on March 17 said that no Sanatani with self respect can survive in the Congress party as the party has now turned to a Miya-Muslim ruled party. MP Pradyut Bordoloi was amongst the last remaining Hindu leaders of Assam Congress and his resignation is a big blow to the party. Earlier Bordoloi said that he has been humiliated on many occasions by te State President Gaurav Gogoi and some Muslim leaders. “Congress MP from Uttar Pradesh Imran Masood openly humiliated me in the election committee meeting but our State President remained silent”, he said.

Welcoming Bordoloi to BJP, CM Sarma said that it is a big boost for the party as Bordoloi is a very experienced and senior leader. He has to quit his MP seat as per existing law and so we requested our central leadership to accommodate him in the assembly election”. It should be mentioned that Bordoloi’s son Prateek Bordoloi is a Congress candidate from Margherita constituency. But after his father’s jump shift to BJP, his fate in the Congress party remains doubtful.

It is noteworthy to mention that MP Pradyut Bordoloi was attacked in one of the minority dominated constituencies in Morigaon district in 2024 by a Muslim mob. Later it was found in the police investigation that Laharighat Congress MLA Asif Nazar’s close aide was involved in the attack. Pradyut Bordoloi was against giving tickets to MLA Asif Nazar this time but his demand was ignored and Asif Nazar was awarded the candidature. “ I have been serving the Congress for the past 4 decades yet I am being humiliated by young leaders every time”, he said.

MP Bordoloi was the chairman of the manifesto committee of the Congress party for Assam.election. But his resignation jolted the entire campaign of the party just ahead of the assembly polls. In the last few months dozens of Hindu leaders resigned from Congress party alleging Muslim appeasement and atrocity of state president Gaurav Gogoi which includes former party president Bhupen Birah who joined BJP last month. A BJP insider said that Pradyut Bordoloi might get a candidature for the upcoming assembly election from a constituency in Guwahati. The Central Parliamentary Board of BJP will meet tonight at 7 PM in Delhi and will release the candidates list for Assam election.
