Tamil Nadu: Muslims oppose renovation of 300-year-old Vinayagar temple in Madurai despite court orders

Tension gripped Thummanayakkanpatti village in Madurai after a section of Muslims protested the renovation of a 300-year-old Vinayagar and Karuppannasamy temple despite court approval. Hindu groups have sought police protection to carry out the renovation and conduct the kumbabhishekam.

It is another classic example of a situation where Muslims, being larger in number or having influence in local affairs, oppose Hindu traditions, the celebration of festivals in temples, and renovation or rebuilding activities. This is exactly what is happening in Peraiyur taluk in Madurai district.

On March 11, tension gripped Thummanayakkanpatti village in Peraiyur taluk of Madurai district after a section of Muslims strongly opposed the renovation work at a 300-year-old Vinayagar and Karuppannasamy temple. The situation has turned tense, resembling a boiling cauldron, as the temple falls under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department and is managed by a hereditary trustees’ board.

According to Hindu Munnani functionaries, the Vinayagar Temple and Karuppannasamy Temple are 300-year-old temples and are located on about 2 acres and 40 cents of land in the village. Appropriate approvals to renovate the temple had been obtained from the state and district expert committees. Renovation works were started as per the expert committee. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court also granted approval for the renovation work.

In January, the High Court dismissed the objections raised by Sahul Hameed through a petition and permitted the temple renovation to proceed. Another petition was filed before the Madurai Bench seeking continuous police protection during the renovation work. On 18 February 2026, the court directed that police protection be provided.

Armed with court orders, the temple’s hereditary trustee Maheswaran and residents of the village submitted a petition to the Madurai Superintendent of Police requesting security until the renovation work is completed and the kumbabhishekam ceremony is conducted.

Hindu Munnani sources said, “A mosque had been built near the temple about 100 years ago. When local residents recently attempted to begin the renovation work based on the court’s order, Muslims from the area entered the temple premises and staged a protest, insisting that the temple should not be renovated and should instead be relocated to another place.” It triggered outrage among Hindus. Police officials intervened and persuaded the protesters to disperse. However, due to the opposition, renovation work at the temple has not yet begun.

Local residents also stated that Hindus are a minority in the village and argued that Muslims blocking the renovation despite a court order was unfair and amounted to contempt of court. They urged the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and resolve the issue.

Rama Ravikumar, leader of Hindu Tamilar Katchi and main petitioner in the Thiruparankundram deepam case, said it was highly shocking that Muslims entered the temple premises and staged a protest against the renovation of the centuries-old Vinayagar and Karuppannasamy temple.

Hindu Munnani condemned and sought the immediate closure of an illegal prayer hall built in the Thisaiyanvilai Bazaar area. After the authorities failed to shut it down, Hindu Munnani cadres brought a Vinayagar murthi and started conducting prayers and poojas. On hearing this, the dutiful TN DMK police came and obtained a written statement and commitment that there would be no prayers at the illegal prayer hall. The illegal prayer hall of Christians has now been permanently removed.

Hindu Munnani condemned the DMK minority appeasement government for calling for tender bids to improve infrastructure to visit mosques and churches in the state and not showing the same concern for Hindu temples. It says, “The TN Tourism Department did not do anything to develop or provide infrastructure facilities to give a big fillip to tourism spots like temples, historically important places, and those associated with freedom fighters or the erstwhile Chola, Pandiya and Chera kings. Doing appeasement in each and everything would not augur well for a secular, social justice Dravidian model DMK government. Applying chunam on the eyes of Hindus after taking away temple funds and buttering the minority would not be tolerated by the majority Hindus for long. Already there are signs of Hindus coming together to oppose such minority appeasement pseudo-secular parties. In the North, Congress was decimated purely because of its minority appeasement, among other issues like rampant corruption. In the Thiruparankundram issue, DMK was exposed for its rank minority appeasement measures by preventing Hindus from lighting a lamp atop the hill as per court orders. Spending temple funds, it hired top-paid lawyers from the North to defend its actions and to prolong the issue till elections.”

Another Hindu Munnani post says, “In Thirunaraiyur, near Kumbakonam, RSS functionary Adhithyan was arrested by police for preventing an evangelical group’s attempt to convert Hindus into Christianity. In the same district in 2019, Ramalingam was hacked to death by Muslims for questioning their conversion activities. The DMK government is hand in glove with the conversion mafia.”

Recently, the DMK government has restricted private schools from hosting programmes that are political, ideological, communal, or divisive in nature. It has amended the Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Rules, 2023, in this regard and has included clauses to restrict activities by any external person, association, or organisation.
