The Centre has directed Netflix India to remove the teaser and all associated promotional content of the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat, starring Manoj Bajpayee, amid escalating controversy over its title, which has been termed casteist and offensive by multiple organisations and political leaders.
The announcement was confirmed by the Bharatiya Janata Party on Feb 6, which stated that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had acted after public outrage and formal complaints regarding the film’s title, announced recently as part of Netflix India’s 2026 content slate.
According to the BJP, the government has instructed the streaming platform to take down not only the teaser hosted on Netflix’s official handles but also all promotional material circulated across social media platforms.
The controversy erupted earlier this week after Netflix unveiled the teaser and title of Ghooskhor Pandat, triggering sharp reactions online. Several social media users, community organisations, and commentators alleged that the title directly targets the Brahmin community and uses a pejorative expression linked to caste identity and traditional occupations.

Such nomenclature reinforces negative stereotypes and undermines social harmony, particularly when disseminated through a global OTT platform with massive reach.
The backlash soon translated into legal action. An FIR was registered at Hazratganj police station in Lucknow, while the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting after receiving a complaint alleging caste-based insult and potential violation of constitutional values.

Adding to the pressure, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), a powerful umbrella body representing 36 associations of film workers, technicians, and artists, formally objected to the title and wrote directly to Netflix India and other OTT platforms.
As per reports, FWICE stated: “FWICE and all its affiliated associations strongly object to the use of this title, as it appears to single out and target a particular community and its traditional means of livelihood in a derogatory and offensive manner.”
The organisation warned that such titles have the potential to “hurt sentiments, provoke misunderstanding, and disturb social harmony,” and reminded content creators of the moral responsibility that comes with the power of cinema.
FWICE further emphasised that there should be no division or provocation on the basis of “caste, creed, religion, or profession,” urging producer bodies to refrain from registering or continuing with film titles that are provocative in nature and capable of creating unrest among citizens.
The federation also appealed to the production house to seriously consider changing the title at the earliest.
Reacting to the Centre’s directive, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia welcomed the decision and described it as a clear message against cultural and religious insult.
In a post on X in Hindi, Bhatia said the offensive content had been removed from Netflix and highlighted that an FIR had already been registered in the matter.
“Anything that goes against any society is completely unacceptable,” a senior BJP leader said, adding that insults to Sanatan Dharma or any caste would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Bhatia further stated that the party would support the strictest possible action against those who demean communities for commercial gain, reiterating the BJP’s guiding principle of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas.
Ghooskhor Pandat is described by its makers as a one-night thriller set in Delhi. Manoj Bajpayee plays Ajay Dikshit, a morally compromised and corrupt police officer, nicknamed Pandat, whose plans for personal gain collapse when he becomes entangled in a larger conspiracy.
The story unfolds after a critically injured girl is thrown out of a moving car. Dikshit accompanies her to a hospital, setting off a chain of tense, interconnected events that expose a global nexus far beyond his initial understanding.
The film relies heavily on atmosphere, action, and the compressed timeline of a single night to drive its narrative. The production team had earlier thanked Netflix for providing the project with a global platform.
