Two incidents in Chennai a couple of days ago have had chilling effects on the citizens of the city, and the entire state is a pointer to the current situation of law and order under Chief Minister MK Stalin, who holds the Home portfolio. A family of Bihar natives, a man, his wife, and their two-year-old child, who came here looking for employment have become victims of the deteriorating security situation, particularly concerning women and children.
What began with the discovery of a sack containing a male dead body on January 26 near Adyar subsequently led to the recovery of his two-year-old son, Birman Kumar. Police are still searching for the body of the 20-year-old woman Munitha (Minukumari), wife of Kaurav Kumar, a native of Nalanda, Bihar. Based on the statement of garbage truck drivers who dumped waste collected from Indira Nagar, police cordoned off the area. The killers had dumped the bodies in different locations. While the child’s body was found in bushes along the Buckingham Canal, her mother’s body is yet to be traced.
Police arrested three Bihar natives in this connection and are questioning them. Kaurav Kumar was working as a security guard in Sriperumbuthur and had come to Chennai to meet another native, Krishna Prasad, for a new job in the city. They were accommodated at Prasad’s residence.
On January 25, while drinking with some of the workers, Kumar allegedly got into a quarrel with them. On seeing her husband being attacked, his wife intervened to protect him. But Sikandar (33) and four of his men hit him with an iron rod, killing Kumar on the spot. They packed his body in a sack and dumped it in front of a two-wheeler showroom. Based on CCTV footage, police arrested two more who dumped the body.
Police have detained five people but formally arrested three, identified as Lalit Yadav (40), Vikas Kumar (24), and Sikander alias Satyendra (30). The accused said they had packed the woman’s body in a sack and thrown it into a garbage bin near the Indira Nagar MRTS railway station.
Women empowerment in DMK govt at its best, said MK Stalin yesterday.
"Drunken" goons raped the Bihari woman and when husband Gourav tried to stop them, they killed him and later killed the wife. Then they smashed and killed the 2-year-old child too, says the news today. 😒 https://t.co/2oCTJ18s5L pic.twitter.com/1ejkif3U0E

As outrage over the killing of the migrant family continued to mount, voices on social media demanded accountability and a human rights probe, even as political reactions began to surface. One netizen demanded a probe by the NHRC into the killing of three people in Tamil Nadu. She said, “The life of the working-class immigrants in Tamil Nadu is at risk. Crimes against them have increased during the DMK regime. Now it’s a Bihari immigrant family, sexually assaulted and killed, including their two-year-old child. The National Human Rights Commission must take cognisance.”

DMK Minister MK Subramanian said it was a family issue.
Media: A North Indian family was killed after the wife was raped.
DMK Minister: These might have happened due to personal issues. Law and order is superb.
“So raping and killing an entire family inside a college is a ‘personal issue’. Feel bad for women who vote for DMK.”

Even as the State grappled with the fallout of this brutal crime, another shocking sexual assault came to light in the city, further intensifying concerns over women’s safety and the prevailing law and order situation in Chennai.
In another shocking incident, a poor 20-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a canteen owner, his friend, and staff. The girl, from a financially poor background, came to Chennai and got a job at a canteen in a Government Arts and Science College at Nandanam and was offered stay at his home. The victim, who escaped from his clutches, approached the police on January 28 and narrated her ordeal. The accused are Muthuselvam, alleged to have close contact with an MLA, Gunasekaran, and Karthikeyan. It came to light that they had raped her multiple times, threatening her with dire consequences.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, in a social media post, expressed concern over the incident. He alleged that such incidents were on the rise, adding that it was a matter of shame that CM MK Stalin continued to remain a mute spectator even as such incidents were increasing. AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran accused the DMK of a lackadaisical attitude towards the recent incidents in Chennai.
BJP leader K Annamalai said in a post on X, “It is shocking to hear about the rape of a 22-year-old girl in a government college canteen by a gang. In Tamil Nadu, the safety and security of women and children have become a big question mark. CM Stalin claims in all meetings that TN is the safest place for women and children without understanding the ground reality. His utterance of lies proved he was wrong after seeing the daily crime incidents in this category. DMK should accept the hard fact that it is not safe for women, so that he can initiate necessary action. Living in a dream world won’t work, and reading from a chit written by someone can’t help solve the issues.”

“The survivor has separated from her husband after ending their four-month marriage. It is alleged that the main accused had raped many women in the past. In both incidents (like Anna University and the canteen case), there are similarities, including high-level contacts with the ruling party. Will the girl get justice, viewed under these circumstances?” the public questioned.
