‘Disrespect to President & North-East’: Rahul Gandhi Skips Traditional Patka at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has come under sharp criticism after allegedly refusing to wear the traditional Patka during the Republic Day At-Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan, an event themed around the cultural heritage of North-East India. The incident, which reportedly occurred despite reminders from the President, has sparked outrage over cultural insensitivity and disregard for constitutional propriety

A fresh political controversy erupted on Republic Day following allegations that Congress MP and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi refused to wear the traditional Patka during the At-Home reception hosted by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The reception, attended by the Prime Minister, Union ministers, governors, foreign diplomats, and other dignitaries, was thematically centred on the culture and traditions of North-East India.

According to accounts circulating in political and diplomatic circles, all dignitaries present at the event, including the President of India, the Prime Minister, and members of the foreign diplomatic corps, wore the traditional Patka as a mark of respect to the region being showcased. Rahul Gandhi, however, allegedly declined to do so, even after being reminded twice, including once directly by the President herself.

The reported refusal has been described by critics as a serious breach of protocol and cultural courtesy, particularly given the symbolic nature of the At-Home reception. The event is traditionally meant to celebrate India’s diversity and unity, with regional themes carefully chosen to highlight the cultural richness of different parts of the country.

Notably, wearing the Patka was not a political statement but a gesture of respect towards the North-Eastern states, many of which have historically complained of neglect and marginalisation in national discourse.

The alleged incident took place in full view of foreign diplomats, adding an international dimension to the controversy. Ignoring a simple cultural protocol at such a high-profile event reflects poorly not just on the individual but also on India’s political decorum before the global community.

Several voices have termed the conduct “habitual insensitivity,” claiming that it reflects a pattern rather than an isolated lapse. They argue that such actions contribute to Rahul Gandhi’s diminishing political relevance and reinforce perceptions of elitism and detachment from India’s cultural ethos.

Demands for an unconditional apology have also emerged, acknowledging the lapse is the minimum corrective step.

Adding to the controversy, many made sharp personal remarks questioning Rahul Gandhi’s judgement and behaviour, though no official response has been issued by the Congress leader or the party so far. The Congress has also remained silent on whether the alleged reminders by the President took place or whether the refusal was intentional.

As the debate continues, the episode has once again brought the spotlight on questions of cultural sensitivity, protocol, and the responsibilities that come with holding a constitutional and political position in public life, especially at moments meant to symbolise national unity.
