New Delhi: Captain Hansja Sharma, India’s first woman Rudra helicopter pilot, is set to lead the 251 Army Aviation Squadron in the upcoming Republic Day Parade, marking yet another historic milestone in her distinguished career and bringing immense pride to J&K.
Hailing from Jammu, Captain Sharma has carved a unique place in Indian Army history by becoming the first female pilot qualified to operate the Rudra armed helicopter, a critical combat asset of the Army Aviation Corps. Her journey into aviation excellence began at the Combat Army Aviation Training School (CAATS) in Nashik, where she not only topped her class but also became the first woman officer to be awarded the Silver Cheetah Trophy, an accolade given to the best combat aviator.
During the Republic Day Parade rehearsals, Captain Sharma demonstrated exceptional leadership by commanding her squadron from a vehicle equipped with the HELINA missile system, designed to strike enemy armour and fortified positions with precision. Her role highlighted both her professional competence and the growing prominence of women in frontline combat roles.
At just 27 years old, Captain Sharma’s achievements are remarkable. Born on March 9, 1998, in Jammu, she completed her schooling at St. Xavier’s Convent School, Barnai, and graduated from Parade College before pursuing studies in the Zoology Department at the University of Jammu. Her entry into the Indian Army was not without challenges. She faced a Temporary Rejection (TR) during selection, but within just 15 days, she underwent a three-hour nose surgery, cleared the medical requirements, and proudly joined the Army.
Her training journey continued to set records. In addition to the Silver Cheetah Trophy, she was awarded First in Order of Merit in the 107th Air Traffic Management & Air Laws (Basic) Course at the Air Traffic Control Officers Training Establishment (ATCOTE), Air Force Academy, reflecting her all-around professional excellence in both aviation and military disciplines.
Captain Sharma is the daughter of senior journalist Mrs. Rashmi Sharma, and her journey reflects the values of discipline, perseverance, and hard work instilled by her family.
