Ghar Wapsi in Chhattisgarh: 200 people hailing from 25 villages reunited with Sanatani traditions in Kanker

The converted villagers decided to return to their original faith after they realised that leaving their age-old customary practices and worship of traditional deities has led to serious division among the Janjatiya society

RAIPUR: Members of nearly 50 tribal (Janjati/Adivasi) families reverted to their original faith in an event organised in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh, on Sunday, January 18.

The program held in the Pidhapal area witnessed participation from around 200 villagers, hailing from 25 villages, including Tultuli, Kristikur, Mandari, Todamarka, and Dhantulsi, who returned to Sanatani traditions in the presence of senior members of the Janjatiya society and Sarv Samaj.

All those who reverted to their ancestors’ faith on Sunday had embraced Christianity under the influence of certain individuals and groups. The returnees alleged that they were lured into conversion with the promise of health benefits and a cure from illnesses.

The converted villagers, however, decided to revert to Sanatan Dharma and reunite with their age-old Janjatiya traditions after they realised that abandoning their customary practices and the worship of traditional deities had resulted in serious division within Janjatiya society.

It is to be noted that a number of such programs facilitating Ghar Wapsi of converted members of the Janjatiya communities have been organised in Kanker district recently.

As many as 15 Janjati families who had converted to Christianity also returned to Sanatani traditions at events held at separate locations in Kanker district last week. The returnees were given a warm welcome by village heads, who washed their feet and welcomed them in their original faith.

Members of as many as 7 families had also reverted to the Sanatan fold at a small gathering organised near the Shitala Mata temple in Kanker’s Bade Tewda area in the first week of January.

Cases of conversion have led to serious scuffles in separate localities of Chhattisgarh, more specifically in its tribal populated pockets of Bastar and Surguja division, with Hindu workers alleging attempts of conversion through unfair means, such as by promising health benefits. The government, on the other hand, has promised to enact a stringent anti-conversion law to tackle the illegal conversion menace.
