The government in Telangana has issued fresh orders allocating 38 municipal chairperson posts (31.4 per cent) to Backward Classes (BCs) across 121 municipalities, finalising reservations for municipal chairpersons and corporation mayors in the State.

Under the latest orders issued by the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government, 38 chairperson posts have been allotted to BCs, 17 to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 5 to Scheduled Tribes (STs) out of the total 121 municipalities.

Earlier, the Telangana government had notified reservations for wards and the offices of Chairpersons and Mayors ahead of the local body elections to municipalities and municipal corporations, expected to be held next month.

According to orders issued by the Municipal Administration (MA) Department on January 13, 2026, reservations have been finalised for 121 municipalities and 10 municipal corporations across Telangana.

The decision was taken based on reports submitted by the Dedicated Commission on Backward Classes and the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA), Hyderabad, as mandated under the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019.

The notification detailed the allocation of reserved wards and leadership posts, including ward-wise reservations, reservations for municipal chairperson posts, and mayor posts in municipal corporations. Women’s reservation has been applied across all categories, in line with statutory provisions.

As per the notification, 5 municipal chairperson posts have been reserved for Scheduled Tribes based on the 2011 Census, with 3 posts in the General category and 2 reserved for Women. For Scheduled Castes, 17 chairperson posts have been earmarked, including 9 General and 8 Women positions.

The Dedicated Commission recommended 38 chairperson posts for Backward Classes, with an equal split of 19 posts each for General and Women, reflecting gender parity within the BC quota.

In addition, the Congress government has reserved 31 chairperson posts for Women (General) under the Telangana Municipalities Act, 2019, while 30 posts remain unreserved.
