NEW DELHI: At least two Maoists were gunned down in an encounter that broke out between security forces and cadres of the banned Maoist’s group in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.
The exchange of fire broke out in the wee hours of Saturday, January 17, after a joint team of security forces launched an operation in the national park area of Bijapur district, upon receiving inputs about presence of Maoists.
As per preliminary reports, bodies of two Maoists have been so far recovered with intermittent firing still continuing at the site of the encounter. The security team has also recovered weapons from the site. More details about the operation are still awaited.
Anti-Maoist campaign is in full swing across affected regions of the state, with security forces eyeing elimination of remaining armed cadres before the deadline set by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Counter-insurgency operations launched in 2025, resulted in neutralisation of several top cadres of Maoist’s outfit, including the group’s former general secretary Nambala Kesav Rao alias Basavaraju.
Amplified campaign against Maoists in Bastar has also prompted mass surrender by Naxal cadres. According to state government, over 1500 Maoists have given up arms in the state in 2025 alone. The Union Government has announced to end Maoist-insurgency by March 2026.
