Lucknow: In a landmark step towards integrating technology with public health, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced the launch of the Uttar Pradesh Artificial Intelligence Mission (UP-AIM). With an investment of Rs 2,000 crore, the mission aims to position Uttar Pradesh as a national leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven healthcare services. The announcement was made during the inauguration of a two-day AI and Health Innovation Conference held in Lucknow, where experts and representatives from leading institutions, including NITI Aayog, the National Health Authority, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Bank, participated.
UP CM Yogi stated that the UP-AIM is in alignment with the goals of the India AI Mission, launched by the Central Government to foster AI innovation across sectors. The UP-AIM will be implemented in a phased manner and is expected to have a far-reaching impact on disease surveillance, digital health records, telemedicine, and predictive healthcare across the state. He emphasized the transformative potential of AI in healthcare.
The mission will promote data-driven decision-making, enabling doctors and health administrators to predict disease outbreaks, identify high-risk populations, and ensure timely interventions. AI tools will help analyze large datasets to improve diagnosis accuracy, optimize treatment plans, and strengthen public health infrastructure at every level, from primary health centers to specialized hospitals.
The initiative will also focus on building AI infrastructure, training healthcare professionals, and collaborating with research institutions and startups to develop innovative healthcare solutions tailored for Uttar Pradesh’s diverse population.
AI-Powered Healthcare Ecosystem: Key focus areas
The UP-AIM will cover multiple dimensions of health innovation, including:
Early Disease Detection and Prevention: AI systems will analyze patient data to detect diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart conditions at an early stage. Predictive models will help identify emerging health risks based on regional data patterns.
Telemedicine and Digital Health Records: The mission will integrate AI into telemedicine services, allowing doctors to provide remote consultations more efficiently. A unified digital health record system will ensure faster access to patient histories and improve coordination among healthcare providers.
Efficient Hospital Management: AI-based solutions will be used for hospital resource planning, reducing patient waiting times, and enhancing overall operational efficiency.
Maternal and Child Health Monitoring: Advanced AI analytics will be applied to track maternal health indicators, reduce maternal mortality, and improve neonatal outcomes through timely alerts and follow-ups.
Public Health and Epidemic Control: AI-driven models will strengthen surveillance and response systems for infectious diseases. Data collected from various health centers will be analyzed in real time to prevent outbreaks.
The Rs 2,000 crore AI Mission will not only improve public health delivery but also create opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship. Uttar Pradesh aims to develop a robust ecosystem where AI startups, medical researchers, and technology experts collaborate on real-world healthcare challenges. Research hubs and innovation labs will be established in partnership with premier institutions like IIT Kanpur, King George’s Medical University (KGMU), and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.
CM Yogi highlighted that the mission will encourage skill development in AI and data analytics for healthcare professionals. Training programs and AI-based courses will be introduced to prepare the next generation of doctors, data scientists, and healthcare administrators for a tech-enabled future.
The UP-AIM aligns with the state government’s larger vision of creating a digitally empowered Uttar Pradesh, where every citizen has access to quality healthcare regardless of geography.
By integrating AI into health services, the government seeks to bridge the urban-rural healthcare gap. AI-enabled mobile applications and telehealth platforms will help patients in remote areas consult doctors and access medicines without long travel or waiting times. CM Yogi reiterated that AI has “great potential to bring about a positive impact on people’s lives.” He added that the mission would play a crucial role in reducing healthcare costs, improving treatment accuracy, and making preventive healthcare accessible to all.
The UP-AIM complements the Central Government’s broader AI strategy, which aims to make India a global hub for Artificial Intelligence innovation. The India AI Mission, launched by the Union Government, focuses on AI applications across healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance.
By aligning its goals with the national mission, Uttar Pradesh seeks to emerge as a model state for AI-based governance and healthcare transformation. While discussing technological advancements, CM Yogi also stressed the importance of balancing development with environmental conservation. He announced a target of planting 35 crore saplings in the state this year, ensuring that infrastructure growth does not come at the cost of ecology. The launch of UP-AIM marks a milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s journey toward smart healthcare governance. The mission’s phased implementation will gradually expand AI integration from tertiary hospitals to community health centers.
