NEW DELHI: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on January 14 paid tribute to veterans on the 10th Armed Forces Veterans’ Day, saying the nation bows in respect to soldiers in India and around the world, and honours those who sacrificed their lives.

Addressing the 10th Armed Forces Veterans’ Day at Manekshaw Centre in the national capital, Singh called veterans a symbol of national pride and an inspiration for future generations.

“On the occasion of Veterans Day, we bow our heads in respect to our veterans living in India and around the world. Our tribute also goes to the soldiers who attained martyrdom and to the grateful nation. Today, I have the opportunity to celebrate Makar Sankranti with this larger family,” Singh said.

“You are the symbol of our national consciousness and an inspiration for future generations. For you, this is not just a profession; it is a vow in which you have placed the nation above yourself. For any society, there can be no greater sacrifice than this. It cannot be expressed in words,” he said.

Singh said that serving as Defence Minister has been the most fulfilling role of his career. He praised soldiers for their dedication, saying that their spirit remains strong even after retirement and that they continue to contribute to nation-building in every way.

“Working with you as Defence Minister has been one of the most joyful moments of my life. I have served as Chief Minister and as Agriculture and Home Minister, but the greatest satisfaction has come from serving as Defence Minister. I consider it my privilege to have had the opportunity to address the challenges in the lives of soldiers,” he said.

“Soldiers are taught that no matter how adverse the conditions, one must never step back. Whether it is Siachen or the heat of Rajasthan, these experiences shape a soldier’s character. A soldier never truly retires; the colour of your uniform may change, but your spirit remains. You contribute to nation-building on every front,” Singh added.

Armed Forces Veterans’ Day is celebrated on January 14 every year, marking the birth anniversary of the Late Field Marshal KM Cariappa, who retired on this day in 1953. A towering figure in India’s military history, Field Marshal Cariappa, the First Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Indian Army, led the forces to victory in the 1947 war and laid the foundation for an enduring legacy of service, discipline, and patriotism, a Ministry of Defence release said.
