Karnataka: BJP registers significant gains in state local body polls amid anti-incumbency against Congress

The BJP registered notable victories in several Karnataka local body elections, reflecting public anger over rising prices of essential commodities and alleged corruption under the Congress government. BENGALURU: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recorded a decisive performance in several local body elections across Karnataka, sending out a strong political message against the ruling Congress government. The results indicate growing public dissatisfaction over rising prices of essential commodities and allegations of increasing corruption since the Congress came to power in the state.

While the Congress retained control in a few local bodies, the BJP won key town panchayats and municipal wards, particularly in coastal and rural regions. Political observers see these results as a reflection of grassroots anger and a warning signal for the state government ahead of future elections.

In the Dakshina Kannada district, the BJP secured a clear majority in both the Bajpe and Kinnigoli town panchayats. In Bajpe, the BJP won 11 of 19 seats, while the Congress won only 4. The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) secured three seats, and one seat went to an Independent candidate. The outcome is being viewed as a major endorsement of the BJP’s organisational strength in the coastal belt.

In the Kinnigoli town panchayat, the contest was close, but the BJP still won 10 of the 18 seats, while the Congress won only 8. Party leaders said the result reflected people’s anger over frequent price hikes, especially for essential items such as rice, cooking oil, milk, and fuel, which have directly affected household budgets.

The BJP also secured a comfortable victory in the Manki town panchayat in Uttara Kannada district. Of the 20 seats, the BJP won 12, while the Congress secured eight. The defeat has reportedly come as a setback to supporters of Congress-backed leaders in the region, further strengthening the BJP’s coastal hold.

In the Bengaluru Rural district, the BJP dominated the Bashettihalli town panchayat, winning 15 of 19 seats, leaving the Congress with just three. This sweeping victory in a region near the state capital is being interpreted as a sign that urban and semi-urban voters are turning against the ruling party due to governance-related issues.

The BJP also made inroads in urban local bodies by winning one seat in the Doddaballapur Municipal Corporation. Additionally, a BJP candidate emerged victorious in the by-election to the fourth ward of the Turvihal town panchayat in Raichur district, further adding to the party’s tally.

BJP leaders have attributed their success to public resentment over what they describe as “runaway corruption” and administrative failures under the Congress government. They alleged that the promise of clean governance made during the Assembly elections has not translated into on-the-ground action, leading to growing disillusionment among voters.

On the other hand, Congressional leaders have played down the results, citing local issues and smaller voter bases as factors. However, political analysts believe the verdict reflects broader anti-incumbency sentiment, driven largely by economic pressures on ordinary citizens.

With the rising cost of living and repeated allegations of irregularities haunting the government, the local body election results are seen as an early indicator of a shifting public mood in Karnataka, giving the BJP renewed momentum at the grassroots level.
