Pak-Afghan tensions escalate: Islamabad airstrikes kill 9 children in Khost province of Afghanistan

In an escalating tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Islamabad airstrikes in the Khost province of Afghanistan have killed nine children and a woman. Pakistan has also conducted air strikes in other regions, thus fueling border tensions which were at a comparatively low-scale for a few weeks, post the fragile ceasefire. Kabul has called the strikes a clear violation of Afghan sovereignty

In the latest phase of escalation of conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the airstrikes unleashed by Islamabad have killed nine children and a woman in the Khost province of Afghanistan. The conflict and the resultant civilian death took place on the night of November 24(Monday). Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson in the Taliban government in Afghanistan reiterated that Pakistani forces bombed a house in the Gurbuz district of the Khost province which led to the death of nine children and a woman. Pakistan military also carried out the airstrikes in the regions of Kunar and Paktika, leading to the death of four civilians, the Taliban government further added.

The Afghanistan government has quoted that the airstrikes conducted by Pakistan is a clear violation of the sovereignty of Afghanistan. “These hostile actions by Pakistani forces achieve nothing. They only prove that operations are driven by flawed intelligence and inflame tensions and expose the ongoing failure of Pakistan’s military regime. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan strongly condemns this violation and act of aggression and stresses that defending its airspace, territory and citizens is its legitimate right. A necessary response will be taken at the proper time”, Spokesperson of the Afghan government wrote on his X social media platform.

Response to yet another violation of Afghanistan’s territory by Pakistani forces
The airstrikes carried out last night by Pakistani forces in Afghanistan’s Paktika, Khost, and Kunar provinces constitute a direct assault on Afghanistan’s sovereignty

Tensions and border conflict have been escalating between Pakistan and Afghanistan for months now, over the demarcated international border line, which is the Durand line. Afghanistan has not recognised the Durand line as the official boundary line, thus escalating conflict between both the nations. Meanwhile, Pakistan also alleges that Kabul hosts the Tehrik-i-Taliban(TTP) militants who are apparently anti-Pakistan. In a resolve to eradicate them, Islamabad attacks Afghanistan.

Pakistan also blames Kabul for all the suicide bombings and other killings taking place in the country. On November 24, a suicide bombing outside the Pakistan Paramilitary Federal Constabulary in Peshawar killed three officers and injured 11 others. Earlier this month, a suicide attack killed 12 people outside a court in Islamabad. Pakistan blames Afghanistan for all these killings.

In October, post a prolonged border clash between Pakistan and Afghanistan a fragile ceasefire was brokered by Turkey and Qatar. Despite this, tensions have not descalated and there is no lasting peace. Pakistan repeats its targets on Afghanistan killing the lives of the children and woman.
