Row in Tamil Nadu after DMK leader Jayabalan says State will prosper only if PM Modi is ‘finished’; BJP demands action

A DMK functionary in Tenkasi has triggered a major political storm after a video of his remarks, interpreted as a death threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, went viral. The BJP has filed multiple complaints and accused the DMK government of shielding habitual offenders

It is nothing new for those who follow Tamil Nadu’s DMK working pattern: spewing the choicest expletives against its political opponents, attacking their religion, caste, and nativity, issuing threats, and speaking in the most obscene manner. Proving he is no different from the others, a Tenkasi DMK functionary declared, short of killing PM Modi, while speaking at a protest against the Election Commission’s SIR exercise in the state.

On November 11, DMK’s Tenkasi District (South) Secretary Jayabalan during his speech against SIR drive,  compared Prime Minister Modi to a demon king from Hindu puranas. “Don’t think we are shouting on the stage for you or ourselves. Modi is desperate to snatch your votes, he is another Narakasuran… Tamil Nadu can be benefited only by finishing him off (eliminating him)… We have to fight this battle unitedly and show victory,” Jayabalan is heard saying in the video.

As the video went viral on social media, netizens not only condemned the DMK functionary’s remarks but demanded his immediate arrest. Yet, despite such an explicit threat issued against a democratically elected Prime Minister, the TN Government and the DMK-controlled police failed to register even a basic complaint against their own functionary.

It is precisely this inaction that has forced BJP functionaries from Tenkasi and Chennai to step in and lodge a formal complaint against Jayabalan at the local police station. Even after that, the state police are reportedly yet to file an FIR, raising serious questions about selective policing and the government’s reluctance to act when the accused belongs to the ruling party.

Taking strong objection and issuing condemnation against Jayabalan, Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran shared the clip online and demanded immediate action. Taking to his social media handle X, he strongly condemned the speech, saying “threatening a leader who holds one of the most important positions in the country, and is respected across the world, raises serious questions about law and order in the state.”

Nagendran criticised Tenkasi MP Rani Srikumar and Sankarankoil MLA Raja, who were reportedly present during the event, for their silence. He said, “Their silence reflected the violent nature of the party,” and demanded that the “DMK government immediately arrest Jayabalan for making remarks that endangered the Prime Minister’s security. The use of the phrase ‘finishing him off/eliminating him’ has become the central point of the outrage, with the BJP interpreting it as a direct threat to the Prime Minister’s life”.

It is pertinent to note that PM Modi is scheduled to visit Coimbatore on November 19 to inaugurate the Southern India Natural Farming Summit and release the 21st instalment of the PM Kisan scheme to farmers.

TN BJP cadres said, “We will not keep quiet for such threatening speeches against PM of the nation. Already one PM, Rajiv Gandhi, was killed on TN soil before the Assembly 1991 elections. In 1997, Justice M.C. Jain indicted the DMK, its leader M. Karunanidhi, and others for the LTTE’s unchecked activities that led to the former PM’s assassination. DMK government should arrest Jayabalan immediately; otherwise BJP will launch a nationwide protest. BJP is a national party. Whoever speaks against PM Modi will be given special treatment”.

As per the copy of the complaint filed with Tenkasi Police Station by town BJP President Sankarasubramanian, said, “On November 11 at Tenkasi new bus stand, DMK conducted a protest against SIR in Tamil Nadu. In that, Jayabalan spoke, used third singular form against PM Modi and tried to confuse the voters by accusing both the government and the ECI. His speech was aimed at sabotaging the integrity and sovereignty of the nation. He (Modi) is trying to disenfranchise you. He is trying very hard to achieve this. He is another Naragasuran (Demon). Tamil Nadu will remain peaceful and happy only when he (Modi) is finished once for all. We will unite”.

Sankarasubramanian has urged the police to arrest him forthwith as his speech amounted to instigating violence and endangering public tranquillity. His speech was made with an ulterior intention of misleading the poll reforms and unity of the country, and is highly seditious. The DMK functionary made this threat openly. It has shocked the BJP cadres and its allies.

TN BJP State Secretary A. Ashvathaman has also lodged a formal complaint with the Tamil Nadu Police against DMK Tenkasi District Secretary Jayabalan, accusing him of making anti-national and seditious remarks that allegedly amounted to a death threat against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In his complaint, Ashvathaman said, “I am forced to send the complaint addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Chennai, via email after the Tamil Nadu Police’s online grievance portal became non-functional,” which he described as symbolic of the state government’s administrative failure. Aswathaman said in the complaint: “Jayabalan allegedly said: ‘Only if we finish off Modi, this nation will be good,’ and ‘Until that decision is fulfilled, Tamil Nadu will not see good days’. It is dangerous, anti-national, and seditious”.

He said such comments from a public office-bearer cannot be ignored. He described the speech as a criminal act that “threatens not only one individual but the nation’s law and order and the mindset of the public.” Warning of future consequences, Aswathaman said, “Ignoring a criminal threat can have major consequences. When such people, especially public servants, engage in seditious activity or issue death threats, ignoring these threats serves as a bad example. If government employees do not act on such threats, it creates an unsafe environment for the public. Making a death threat against the country’s Prime Minister is highly condemnable. When such threats are made by a public functionary, the consequences can be severe and long-lasting.”

It is learnt that on 18.11.2025 BJP cadres burnt the poster of Jeyabalan at Surandai, Tenkasi district.

BJP leader Amit Malviya, in a post on X, said: “Just ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Coimbatore, DMK Tenkasi South District Secretary V. Jayabalan unleashes vile hatred, openly declaring that Tamil Nadu can prosper only if PM Modi is assassinated. What’s worse, the DMK MP and MLA present in the video remain mute spectators—offering not even a token objection to this grotesque threat. Their silence is an endorsement. This is the lawlessness that thrives under the DMK regime, where hate-filled extremism is normalised and party leaders feel emboldened to issue death threats against the Prime Minister. Will CM Stalin maintain his studied silence, or will he finally act and have this dangerous offender arrested?”.

Shocking!

Critics say, “Given the track record, DMK would not take action against Jayabalan as it needs such persons to boost its victory in the 2026 elections. If at all, it would only suspend him till the din dies down. Then he will come back with more zest. Earlier, DMK platform speaker Shivajai Krishnamurthy, who threatened the Governor and BJP leaders in highly objectionable and obscene manner, was expelled twice, only to be taken back after a short while. In 2022, BJP leader Khushbu Sundar filed a complaint regarding ‘derogatory’ comments made by DMK functionary Saidai Sadiq about women leaders during a public event in Chennai. There were no FIRs against Muslim fundamentalists, May 17 movement leader Daniel Thirumurugan Gandhi, and others who issued veiled and open threats to RSS and BJP leaders, including PM and HM Amit Shah, despite public outcry”.
