Hyderabad’s Old City often finds itself in the news for the wrong reasons and once again, it has come under the spotlight following the arrest of Dr Ahmad Mohiuddin Syed, a physician from Rajendranagar, whose alleged links to a wider terror conspiracy have prompted an interstate investigation.
According to media reports, Dr Mohiuddin, who grew up in Khammam and completed his schooling there and intermedia from Warangal, was the eldest among six siblings. His mother, Asrath Fazul, moved to Khammam with her children after separating from her husband. After finishing his Intermediate studies in Warangal, Mohiuddin travelled to China in 2007 to pursue an MBBS degree when he failed to secure a seat through the state board EAMCET examination.
Upon returning in 2013, he began practising medicine at several hospitals in Hyderabad before shifting to small business ventures after the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports indicate that he partnered in a hotel in Attapur, managed a juice centre, and also offered online medical consultancy services. He was reportedly engaged to a woman, but the alliance did not materialise.
As per reports, Dr Mohiuddin reportedly came into contact with a person identified as Abu Khadija through online platforms. As per investigating agencies, he later began conducting chemical experiments involving Ricin, a toxic substance, in a locked room of his residence at Port View Colony, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. Family members are said to have believed his frequent trips to Ahmedabad were business-related, though officials now suspect otherwise.
The investigation gained momentum when the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), acting on specific intelligence, arrested Dr Mohiuddin along with two individuals from Uttar Pradesh, Azad Suleman Sheikh and Mohammad Suhail Saleem Khan. The trio were allegedly awaiting instructions from a foreign handler known as Abu Khadija.
The Telangana Counter-Intelligence Cell and Gujarat ATS are now jointly examining the suspects’ backgrounds, travel records, and digital communications. As per reports, the room in which Dr Mohiuddin conducted his experiments has been sealed for forensic analysis, while further investigations continue into the network’s reach and possible interstate connections.
