Tamil Nadu: Muslim youths attack BJP SC wing functionaries near Vellore after damaging party banners and flag

A group of Muslim youths allegedly attacked BJP SC Wing functionaries near Vellore after vandalising the party’s banners and flag. The incident, which took place on 19 October at Ajipura village in Vellore district, has triggered tension in the area. BJP leaders accused the local police of inaction and bias, alleging that the attackers warned them not to hold such events in future

Another dangerous trend, a West Bengal or Bangladesh type, is lurking in Tamil Nadu, proving that Muslim domination would dictate terms to local Hindus. The Muslim fanatic aggression is slowly seeping into the DMK’s Dravidian Model government. Before it turns into a death path for Hindus, like what had happened in Kashmir in the late 1980s, authorities should take appropriate steps. It may sound like an exaggeration, but ground reality is the yardstick.

Already, in places like Melvisharam in Ranipet district, Kottaimedu in Coimbatore district, Melapalayam in Tirunelveli town, and several parts of Ramanathapuram district, it is alleged that non-residents or outsiders, including the police, cannot enter the villages, especially Hindus. In some places, there are even restrictions imposed on them. We are not talking about the Waqf Board claiming Hindu properties as theirs.

In the recent incident that took place near Vellore, Tamil Nadu BJP SC Wing functionaries were waylaid, and the party’s banners and flags were vandalised. The attackers reportedly left a warning not to venture to do such things in the village again. Incidentally, the Tamil Nadu Police did not act on the BJP’s complaint. The TN Police are known for their biased attitude in not taking action or registering FIRs against Muslims, Christians, and DMK men, for reasons best known to them.

According to confirmed sources in the police and Hindu Munnani, the incident took place on October 19. It is alleged that around 4 p.m., a group of Muslim youths damaged the BJP banner and flag displayed at Ajipura (near NH), in Karukampathur village under the Vellore North Police Station limits, Vellore district.

District President of the BJP SC Wing, Saravanan, had displayed a banner for a meeting organised under the leadership of Karthiyahini, State General Secretary of the party, to introduce 21 new functionaries of the SC wing and distribute Diwali hampers to local beneficiaries. State President of the BJP SC Wing, Sampathraj, was the chief guest at the function, which was held at Saravanan’s residence, an area predominantly inhabited by the SC community. Members of the Muslim community reside behind the residence where the programme took place.

The Muslim youths, on seeing the BJP banner and flag, damaged them and questioned who had “kept it in our region.” This led to heated arguments between the BJP functionaries and the Muslim youths, who were allegedly in an inebriated state. BJP members questioned why their banners and flags were damaged. In the melee, Karthiyahini’s vehicle, which was about to leave the area, was blocked by the Muslim mob, who also obstructed the vehicle of K.G. Kutty alias Deenadayalan, an ex-functionary of the SC wing, for “keeping the banner in their area.”

District President Saravanan alleged that although they had obtained police permission for the programme, no police personnel were deployed in the region. The BJP has submitted a formal complaint in this regard.

Vellore Hindu Munnani functionary, Mahesh, said the Muslim youths had warned them not to pass through the stretch in future, destroyed the flags and banners displayed for the event, and created a ruckus for quite some time. It is doubtful whether they were under the influence of alcohol when they attempted to attack the BJP SC Wing leaders.

The BJP team met Vellore District Superintendent of Police, Mayilvaganan, and submitted a petition. The SP assured them of action against those responsible for destroying the BJP flags and banners. It is pertinent to note that Virinjipuram Inspector Subha did not act on their complaint and failed to provide protection to the BJP, standing as a mute spectator.

BJP leaders accused the Virinjipuram police of allowing the situation to go out of control and causing the ensuing ruckus. “We now pin our hopes on the SP, who has assured action against them. Let us wait and see what steps he takes,” said the BJP functionaries.

In another incident, two policemen, one Christian and one Muslim, allegedly attacked Hindus who were bursting crackers on Diwali day at Avinashi Big Temple Street in Tiruppur district. The cops attacked Hindus, including a woman who suffered a fracture in her limbs and had to be hospitalised. The attackers were alleged to have been in an inebriated state.

On one side, the DMK government restricted the bursting of firecrackers, citing pollution, while remaining oblivious to other forms of pollution such as the use of cone speakers in mosques, the slaughter of goats, chickens, and camels during festivals of other religions. Meanwhile, it is alleged that police personnel belonging to minority communities attack Hindus for bursting crackers even during the permitted time slots. It is unclear whether these attackers were on duty or not. Even if off duty, they are expected to act impartially and should not have taken the law into their own hands.

Critics point out that during the 75 years of Independence, police have at times refused permission to hold Triranga rallies in certain parts of Tamil Nadu, claiming that the routes would pass through minority-dominated areas or near mosques or churches. Such acts reveal an increasing intolerance towards others, a disregard for the law, and a separatist mindset that poses a grave threat to social harmony. Recently, permission was denied to view live broadcasts of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly Mann Ki Baat programme and to hoist BJP flags in fishermen’s areas. There have also been restrictions on Hindu festivals and on programmes of the RSS and its inspired organisations.
