Government of India’s firm resolve towards achieving the goals of Atmanirbharta in every sector and in every stratum has lately seen a new addition. It is ‘Mappls’, an indigenous alternative to the Google Maps. After Zoho and Arratai, the Mappls is another milestone in the path of indigenizing the tech ecosystem and seeking self-reliance.

On October 12, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology demonstrated the process of using ‘Mappls’. Thus, the government fosters ease of navigation and commutation for the citizens with an indigenous touch. On his X social media platform, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, posted a video and explained the features of the Mappls app. He also highlighted the unique features in the app that makes it stand out from its other competitors.

Mappls by MapmyIndia

Mappls, the Swadeshi digital navigation guide is designed and developed by MapmyIndia. It is a one among the leading tech companies of India who is expertise in digital maps, geospatial software and other location-based IoT technologies. Minster Ashwini Vaishnaw, after experiencing the Mappls wrote, “Swadeshi ‘Mappls’ by Mapmy India. Good features….must try”.

Indigenous, yet exemplary characteristics of ‘Mappls’

The unique feature of ‘Mappls’ that makes it stand out from other navigation apps is that it seeks to bridge the loopholes in other apps, including the Google Maps. Currently, the people of India predominantly rely on the Google Maps to trace the routes and reach the destination. However, Google Maps give inaccurate results and mislead the commuters. There are many incidents reported across India regarding the misguidance rendered by Google Maps and as an impact people have landed in wrong destinations or have been stranded in some troublesome situations.

3-dimensional view: To avoid such discrepancies, ‘Mappls’ provide three-dimensional junction view to the users if there are any bridges or other erections in the path ahead. This feature thus gives much clearer and accurate pictures. “Wherever there is an over bridge or underpass, the app provides a three dimensional junction view to ensure that the users are not mistaken. The app also works in multi-storeyed buildings where it guides users’ way to different floors that they want to reach”, Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw further added.

Data localization and security: Another pivotal feature of the Mappls is data localization. The key credentials and crucial details pertaining to the Indian citizens will be stored and secured within India. Thus, such home-grown apps boost the data privacy, data security and sovereignty paradigm of the country.

In the recent decades, with increasing geopolitical contestations, there is a spiking concern that crucial data about the masses can be illicitly used by foreign companies or their home countries to fulfill their hegemonic and geopolitical ambitions. The threats of data breach, cyber warfare are looming day-by-day. Thus, in the complex era of multidimensional warfare, data localization is growing as a critical aspect in strengthening the national security architecture and ‘Mappls’ aids to achieve this goal.

India’s maiden digital address system: Digital address system refers to a unique, geo-coded identifier for a specific location. It can be considered as a digital alternative for the traditional address given to streets and buildings. They use latitudes and longitudes to generate digital addresses.

Mapmy India, through its Mappls, has thus come up with India’s maiden digital address system, which is completely indigenously crafted. Thus, adds another security dimension, as the country’s critical locations are protected from foreigners. Along with security, the indigenous digital address system helps to generate more precise locations, thus ensuring credible and ease of navigation.

Integration with DIGIPIN: Mapmy India has also collaborated with the Indian Postal Department in order to further facilitate the development of country’s maiden digital address system. The tech company aims to weave together the digital address system, DIGIPIN developed by Indian post and ultimately plug it into the Mappls app for accelerating high-quality and extremely authentic navigation facilities.

DIGIPIN is an initiative of the Indian Postal Department as a part of revolutionizing the Digital Public Infrastructure(DPI) across the country. It refers to a standardized, geo-coded addressing system. As per the postal department, DIGIPIN is developed to enable “simplified addressing solutions for seamless delivery for public and private services”. The goal is to foster “Address as a Service” across the nation. Hence, the tech collaboration between Mapmy India and the Indian posts is a landmark step in the path of tech indigenization in the country, with highest scale of credibility, public trust and accuracy.

Mappls thus marks innovative, inspiring and yet another quantum leap in the path of furnishing self-reliance in the tech world, in line with Zoho and Arattai. The tech creation and advancement in the century of fourth industrial revolution is not just crucial to carve a mammoth share for India in the increasingly tech-based globalization era, but also to gain multitudinal momentum in the era of tech-dominated geopolitical conflicts.

Ultimately, home-grown futuristic technologies like Mappls is a testament to India’s tech capabilities, innovation abilities of the youth devoid of depending on other countries and tapping the hidden potential of self-reliance. These, definitely will drive India towards Viksit Bharat, a developed India rooted in indigenous traditions, aspirations, capabilities and ofcourse state-of-the-art technologies.
