Guwahati: Amid chanting of mantras, thousands singing his songs and with state honour, the mortal remains of Assam’s musical legend Zubeen Garg merged in ‘Panch Mahabhoot’. The favourite son of Assam who died in Singapore on September 19 was cremated today in Kamarkuchi near Guwahati with full state honour. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, state assembly speaker Biswajit Daimari, union ministers Kiren Rijiju, Sarbananda Sonowal, Pabitra Margherita, representatives of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh governments, dozens of organisations, student unions and thousands of his fans bids adieu to the legendary singer. Displaying his sorrow like crores of fellow Assamese CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote in his X handle, “The final goodbye to the legend, #BelovedZubeen.

Zubeen’s mortal remains were kept in Guwahati’s Sarusajai stadium for two days after he was brought back from Singapore. Several lakhs of his fans and followers paid homage to the icon. 4 days of state mourning was declared from 20th 23rd September by the state government. Earlier PM Modi, BJP national president J P Nadda, home minister Amitsha, Royal Bhutan government, Bangladesh government, all NE states and several leaders condolled the untimely demise of the singer.

It should be mentioned that in his short life of 52 years, Zubeen Garg sang over 30,000 songs in 40 Indian languages including Assamese, Hindi, Bengali etc. He also sang songs in almost every tribal language of the Northeast. Starting his singing career in 1992 at the age of 20, Zubeen composed songs for over 50 films in Assamese, Bengali and Hindu. He also produced, directed and acted in a dozen of Assamese. The singer who is known as the people’s singer single handedly rejuvenated the Assamese music industry during the dark era of insurgency in early 90s which still flourish with his every song. Crores of his followers feel that the void created by the untimely death of Zubeen Garg, will remain empty in the field of music and art in Assam.
