Jharkhand: 9 JJMP Naxals including zonal commander surrender in Latehar

The surrendered ultras laid down a significant cache of arms and ammunition including AK-47, AK-56 and SLRs

Ranchi: In a notable success for security forces and police in Jharkhand, as many as nine active cadres of the banned outfit Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), surrendered before authorities in Latehar district, officials said on September 1.

The group who laid down weapons before the official was led by Ravindra Yadav, a zonal commander of the JJMP carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh. Yadav was named in 14 cases.

The other notables among those who surrendered before the officials on Monday are Sub-Zonal Commanders Akhilesh Yadav, Baldev Ganjhu and Mukesh Ram alias Kallu, all carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh each as announced by the government.

Sharing the news, Central Reserve Police Force [CRPF] in a post on X said, “In a significant setback to the JJMP outfit, 09 active Naxals–including Zonal and Sub-Zonal Commanders and 05 carrying cash rewards–surrendered today before senior officers of CRPF, SSB and Jharkhand Police at the SP Office, Latehar.”

The JJMP group during the surrender on Monday also laid down arms including 4 AK-47s, 3 SLRs, one AK-56. two .303 rifle, A CAL-30 MI semi rifle along with a significant cache of ammunition which included 26 magazines and over 1700 live cartridges.

The officials present on the occasion noted that this is the first time that such a large number of cadres of a banned outfit with weapons have surrendered before the police in the State.

Police on July 26 had gunned down three hardcore JJMP Maoists in an encounter that broke out between a joint team of security forces and the extremists in Gumla district. The operation was launched after the police received intel about presence of Maoists in forest area under the jurisdiction of Ghaghra police station.

The security team after the gun fight had also recovered an AK-47 and two INSAS rifles from the spot.

Notably a joint team of security personnel on May 24 had also gunned down Pappu Lohra, chief of the JJMP.

A hardcore Maoist, Pappu Lohra was named in around 100 cases and carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head. He was also named in a case related to murder of a CRPF deputy commandant.

Earlier a hardcore Maoist named in around 50 cases had also surrendered before the police in Jharkhand’s Latehar district on July 15.

The surrendered Naxal Lovlesh Ganjhu alias Lavkesh Ganjhu was active as a sub zonal commander of JJMP. He was involved in several encounters and facing 50 cases against him lodged in Latehar and other nearby districts. Ganjhu was carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh.

Security forces and the police have intensified Anti-Maoist campaign in the State of Jharkhand with arrest of more than 70 Maoists in Latehar since January this year alone. Only two districts of Jharkhand are included in the list of 18 most Maoist-affected districts in the country. Among the affected districts in the State are West Singhbhum and Latehar.
