ABVP Karyakartas baton-charged at SRMU during protest over disputed law degree recognition, arbitrary fees

Tension flared at Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University (SRMU) on September1 as police baton-charged Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) karyakartas protesting against the alleged non-recognition of law degrees and arbitrary fee hikes. Several students were injured in the crackdown, even as the agitation drew wider attention to grievances over academic and financial irregularities

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Karyakartas held a major protest today at Shri Ram Swarup Memorial University (SRMU) against severe administrative irregularities. The demonstration, which highlighted issues of student harassment, arbitrary fees, and the questionable recognition of its law degree, turned confrontational when the university administration allegedly deployed police forces, who then lathi-charged the peacefully protesting students as they sought a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor.

The protest was organized after students’ questions regarding the university’s policies were repeatedly ignored. The situation escalated when a student delegation attempting to meet with Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vikas Mishra was met with police force instead of dialogue. ABVP is now demanding an immediate and direct conversation with the Vice-Chancellor, the unconditional reinstatement of the expelled students, and complete transparency regarding the Law program’s affiliation with the Bar Council of India (BCI).

The ABVP has accused the university of multiple transgressions that jeopardize students’ futures. Key among these are the ongoing deception since 2022 about the law degree’s BCI recognition, the unconstitutional expulsion of students Adarsh Pandey and Abhay Ram Tripathi for raising these concerns, the imposition of exorbitant and arbitrary fines for late fees, and the administration’s opposition to a student-led ‘Tiranga Yatra’ on August 15th.

Issuing a stern warning, ABVP’s Awadh State Secretary, Pushpendra Bajpai, stated, “This protest by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad will continue until the Vice-Chancellor himself comes forward to speak with the students, the expelled students are reinstated with dignity, and the situation regarding the law degree’s recognition is clarified. We will not tolerate any injustice against student interests.” The organization has vowed to continue its demonstration on campus until all demands are met.
