Just a day after Udaipur Files was released in cinemas across India, producer Amit Jani has alleged receiving multiple death threats from an unknown caller. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Jani claimed the caller introduced himself as “Tabrez from Bihar” and warned that he would be killed either with a bomb or by gunfire.
Quoting the exact threats, Jani wrote in Hindi: “From the number +971566707310, I have been receiving continuous threats today to blow me up with a bomb, to shoot me, along with abuses. The person claims to be from Bihar and has given his name as Tabrez. A case should be registered against him and he should be arrested.”
He tagged the Union Home Ministry, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Uttar Pradesh Police, and the state government, urging them to register a case and ensure the accused is apprehended.
This is not the first time Jani has raised concerns about his safety. Last month, the Union Government sanctioned Y-category armed security cover for him in both Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The decision followed the Supreme Court’s directive that allowed him to approach the police for protection after he alleged life threats.
The Y-category security detail includes 8 to 11 armed personnel, including commandos, providing round-the-clock protection.
Udaipur Files finally hit the screens on August 8, 2025, after a series of delays caused by censorship issues and legal challenges. The Delhi High Court cleared the film’s release just a day prior, following the Supreme Court’s instruction for expedited hearings on the matter.
Originally scheduled for release on July 11, the film faced petitions challenging the government’s approval, citing concerns over law and order.
The movie is based on the brutal killing of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was murdered on June 28, 2022, for allegedly sharing a social media post supporting former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The accused, Mohammad Riaz Attari and Ghaus Mohammad, entered Lal’s shop pretending to be customers before attacking him with a knife and slitting his throat.
The duo filmed the attack and circulated the video online, openly claiming responsibility. The incident sparked nationwide outrage, bringing to the forefront concerns over radicalisation and communal violence.
The case, initially handled by the Rajasthan Police, was later transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The accused were charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and various IPC provisions. The trial is ongoing before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
Directed by Bharat S Shrinate and Jayant Sinha, Udaipur Files stars Vijay Raaz in the lead role and is produced by Amit Jani. The film attempts to depict the chilling events surrounding the murder and its socio-political ramifications.
