A man posing as a doctor for over a decade has been arrested in Assam’s Silchar for performing around 50 caesarean section deliveries without holding any medical qualifications. Identified as Pulok Malakar, the accused was well-known locally as an obstetrician and gynaecologist and had been operating at two private hospitals.
Malakar was arrested on August 4 from inside an operation theatre while in the middle of a C-section surgery. Investigations revealed that all his medical certificates were forged. He had been using fake documents allegedly issued by the Odisha Council of Medical Registration and Utkal University, which were later confirmed as fake during verification.
Malakar hails from the neighbouring Sribhumi district and also provided other treatments to patients. His arrest marks the 50th such case of a fake doctor caught in Assam as part of an anti-quackery initiative led by Dr Abhijit Neog, vigilance officer of the Assam Council of Medical Registration. Dr Neog filed a police complaint after receiving credible information about Malakar’s forged credentials.
