Jalandhar: The world of athletics and countless admirers are in mourning following the tragic demise of Fauja Singh, the venerable marathon runner and an enduring symbol of human resilience, who passed away at the age of 114 in a road accident on July 14. Known globally as the “Turbaned Tornado,” Singh’s incredible journey, which began seriously at the age of 89, inspired millions by proving that age is merely a number when it comes to pursuing passion and pushing boundaries.

Born on April 1, 1911, in Beyas village, Jalandhar, India, Fauja Singh’s life was a testament to unwavering determination. While a late bloomer in the competitive running scene, his innate connection to physical activity was a lifelong companion, as old-timers in his village often recounted his habit of “running from one place to another.” It was, however, a deeply personal tragedy – the loss of his son Kuldip and his wife – that propelled him into the structured world of marathon running at an age when most consider slowing down. Running became his solace, his new focus, and ultimately, his global platform.

rest easy #FaujaSingh

In 2000, at the remarkable age of 89, Fauja Singh laced up his running shoes for his inaugural marathon, the London Marathon. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary competitive career that saw him complete nine full marathons across London, Toronto, and New York. His personal best in a marathon was an astonishing five hours, 40 minutes, and four seconds, achieved at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. He consistently defied expectations, setting multiple age-group records, though not all were officially ratified due to the absence of a birth certificate from his early 20th-century birth. Despite this, his achievements were universally recognized for their sheer inspirational power.

Beyond the finish lines, Fauja Singh became a global icon. His distinctive image, often seen with his flowing white beard and saffron turban, graced advertising campaigns for major sports brands alongside legends like David Beckham and Muhammad Ali. He carried the Olympic torch for both the 2004 Athens Games and the 2012 London Olympics, a testament to his status as an international beacon of inspiration and the indomitable spirit.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, deeply saddened by the news, extended his heartfelt condolences. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner and an enduring symbol of resilience and hope,” Kataria wrote in a poignant social media post. He recalled walking alongside Singh during the ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march in December 2024, highlighting how even at 114, Singh’s presence “infused the movement with unparalleled energy and spirit.” The Governor lamented the tragic circumstances of his death, emphasizing that Singh’s legacy would continue to inspire a healthier, drug-free Punjab and generations worldwide.

Fauja Singh’s life philosophy was simple yet profound: discipline, a simple vegetarian diet, and a commitment to continuous movement. He embodied the belief that true strength comes from within and that age should never be a deterrent to pursuing one’s goals. He often spoke of running as a way to stay connected to God and maintain his health, never relying on supplements or tonics, just real food and consistent physical activity. His biography, “The Turbaned Tornado,” authored by Khushwant Singh, further cemented his place as a beloved figure.

His body has been moved to a mortuary, awaiting the arrival of his children from abroad before his final rites are performed. As the world bids farewell to a man who defied time and expectations, Fauja Singh’s life stands as a powerful reminder that with resilience, purpose, and an unyielding spirit, one can truly run to the very end of life’s marathon, inspiring countless others along the way. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to motivate individuals of all ages to embrace life with vigor and defy limitations.
