Patna: Police on July 13 arrested an individual, Mohammad Meraj from Begusarai district of Bihar for issuing death threats to Union Minister Chirag Paswan on social media, officials said.

“A case was registered against the threat issued and upon technical investigation the police traced a comment made by user Sahil Safiq, stating that the individual who have threatened the Union Minister is mentally unstable. The police later located the said user as a resident of Samastipur district,” said an official.

“Upon enquiring further, we found that the man who issued threat against the Union Minister is a resident of Samastipur. He was identified as Mohammad Meraj (21). A team led by DSP Cyber Crime then arrested Md. Meraj from Teghara area of Begusarai. The police also seized the mobile used in the crime from the accused with Intagram ID (tiger_meraj_idrisi) active in the device,” he added.

“The arrested accused was subsequently handed over to the Patna cyber police for further legal proceedings,” said the official.

Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) national president Chirag Paswan received a death threat on social media with the arrested accused claiming he would kill the minister in a bomb attack on July 11. The threat was issued in a comment on a Instagram post of user Daksha Priya.

Following the threat, party spokesperson Rajesh Bhatt lodged a complaint at the cyber police station in Patna on July 11 evening. Another complaint was registered at the cyber police station of Samastipur district by the district head of  LJP (R). The police upon receiving the complaints initiated an investigation and arrested the accused.
