In a landmark move towards women’s empowerment and ensuring gender-inclusive policing, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has successfully concluded one of the largest and most transparent police recruitment drives in the state’s history. Under this initiative, a total of 60,244 new police personnel have been recruited in a transparent and merit-based manner. Notably, this massive recruitment drive has paved the way for significant participation of women in the state’s police force, reflecting both empowerment and inclusive development.

A Record-Breaking Recruitment Drive
According to official sources and information from the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB), the recruitment process was completed in a sensitive, accountable, and corruption-free manner. The recruitment included:
27,178 women police constables appointed across various units
10,378 women beat assignments distributed for better grassroots policing
Establishment of 75 women police stations and 78 women police counselling centres
Availability of 346 women PQRs (Police Quick Response teams) focused on night patrolling and women’s safety
The state government’s slogan “सशक्त नारी, समृद्ध प्रदेश” (Empowered Women, Prosperous State) is no longer a mere catchphrase. Through such initiatives, the government is implementing systemic reforms to ensure that women not only participate in the law enforcement apparatus but also lead it at various levels.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasised that “inclusivity and merit” are the cornerstones of the new Uttar Pradesh. By promoting women’s entry into traditionally male-dominated professions like policing, the state is sending a strong message: women are equal stakeholders in the state’s development and security.
The recruitment of more than 60,000 police personnel, including over 27,000 women, was conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board under strict transparency norms. Biometric attendance, digital documentation, and camera-monitored physical tests ensured that there was no room for manipulation or favouritism.
This has significantly boosted public trust in the system, especially among families of young women who were often sceptical about corruption or bias in previous recruitment drives.
Why Women in Police Matter?
The inclusion of 27,178 women police personnel is not just about numbers; it is about reforming law enforcement from within. Women in police bring with them greater sensitivity in handling cases of domestic abuse, harassment, trafficking, and gender-based violence. The allocation of 10,378 women beat assignments means that now, at the beat level, the smallest unit of police jurisdiction, women will be available as the first point of contact for local residents. This is expected to:
Increase reporting of crimes against women
Improve community-police relations
Create a safer environment in both urban and rural areas
The establishment of 75 dedicated women police stations across the state further strengthens this effort. These police stations are staffed entirely by women officers and are equipped to handle:
Cases of domestic violence
Dowry-related issues
Sexual harassment
Counseling for survivors
Additionally, 78 women’s police counselling centres have been made operational, providing psychological and legal support to victims of gender-based crimes. These centres are often the first refuge for women in distress and play a critical role in conflict resolution and pre-litigation counselling.
To ensure women’s safety during the night hours, the state has made available 346 dedicated women Police Quick Response (PQR) teams, especially for night escort and patrolling duties. These mobile units, equipped with two-wheelers and emergency support systems, act swiftly in distress calls from women and help in maintaining round-the-clock vigilance in sensitive areas. This directly supports the Women Power Line 1090, the Emergency Response System 112, and other helplines and ensures real-time action and assistance.
Under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s leadership, Uttar Pradesh is setting a new benchmark in inclusive governance, women’s empowerment, and institutional reform. The successful recruitment of over 27,000 women into the police force, along with the establishment of gender-sensitive units and night safety infrastructure, goes beyond mere numbers. It is a bold step toward building a safe, just, and progressive society.
With this momentum, Uttar Pradesh is not only safeguarding its women but also preparing them to become protectors of society, driving home the message loud and clear: A strong state is one where women are empowered in every uniform, every office, and every home.
