Amritpal Singh Mehron, a Nihang Sikh leader, has claimed responsibility for the murder of Punjabi social media influencer Kamal Kaur, also known as Kanchan Kumari. A video has now surfaced on social media as of Friday (June 13).

In a video going viral on social media, Mehron confessed that the Kamal Kaur was murdered by two of his aides for “defaming Sikh values” and “mocking the surname Kaur.”

Amritpal Singh Mehron is currently on the run from law enforcement authorities. He has also threatened other social media creators and influencers against posting “objectionable content.”

Mehron posted a video on social media taking responsibility for the act. In the video, he alleged that Kaur had defamed Sikh traditions and used the name ‘Kaur’ to share obscene content. He also issued a warning to other online creators. “Khalsa never attacks women, but when a woman targets our Takhts and mocks Sikh values, she cannot be spared,” Mehron said. Justifying his actions, he showed clips of Kaur’s past videos.

He had previously threatened influencer Deepika Luthra, who is now frightened after the killing of Kamal Kaur.

In this matter, Instagram user Preet Jatti has shared a video showing the threatening calls she’s been receiving. She says she’s being harassed and warned not to post videos on songs. Amritpal Singh Mehron had earlier threatened her for promoting an astrologer.

While speaking about the matter, Bathinda SSP Amneet Kondal said, “He (Mehron) was not found at his house, but multiple raids are being conducted. The fresh video and the threats that he has issued are also under investigation.”

Interestingly, a few days before the murder, Mehron had contacted Kamal Kaur for a paid promotional event and asked her to come to Bathinda.

“He visited again the next day and convinced her to visit Bathinda. On June 9, he contacted her again and she agreed, and after 11 pm that night, her mother lost all contact with her,” the SSP added.

She left her home in Ludhiana on June 9 with Jaspreet and Nimratjit. A few hours later, she was killed in her own car.

Kamal Kaur, a Ludhiana resident, was known for her short videos on Instagram, where she had more than 3.83 lakh followers. Her content had previously attracted threats from religious groups and overseas-based gangsters.

The car in which Kaur’s body was found was reportedly registered in Ludhiana, but police suspect the registration number may be fake. Officers believe the murder may have occurred at another location, and the body was later placed in the vehicle. Local residents informed the police after noticing a foul smell coming from the parked car. Police then arrived, recovered the body, and traced the registration details. Kaur had left for Bathinda on June 9 to attend an event and had not contacted her family since then.

Police arrest two Nihangs in connection with the murder

Meanwhile, two Nihang Sikhs have been taken into custody for their suspected role in the crime. Authorities are investigating their possible links with Mehron and their involvement in the case.

Nihangs are a warrior sect in Sikhism. They are recognised for their distinctive blue attire, traditional arms. The accused, however, were not wearing the traditional dress when they committed the crime.

The accused claimed that Kamal Kaur’s content on social media was immoral and hurt community sentiments.

Police are now examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to reconstruct Kaur’s last known movements and identify all those involved in the crime.

Who is Amritpal Singh Mehron?

The extremist Sikh leader, Amritpal Singh Mehron, aged about 30, has a controversial past. He is facing several cases of violence. According to the police, he is the key conspirator in the murder of social media influencer Kamal Kaur (Kanchan Kumari), popularly known as Kamal Kaur Bhabhi.

Mehron leads a self-styled radical organisation called ‘Qaum De Rakhe’. He, along with others, was booked in 2020 for allegedly vandalising some statues of folk dancers at the heritage street near the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Last year, he had also threatened a music producer in Barnala in a similar manner, said the police.

He works as a diesel mechanic and is a resident of Mehron village in the Moga district. He contested the Assembly elections as a Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) candidate from Tarn Taran in 2022. Notably, Simranjit Singh Mann is the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar). He is also a former Indian Police Service officer. Mann has served three terms as an MP, once from Tarn Taran between 1989 and 1991, and twice from Sangrur between 1999–2004 and since 2022. He is a known Khalistani supporter, and his party is known for its pro-Khalistan stance.
