Guwahati: Attacking the newly appointed Assam Congress president and MP Gaurav Gogoi without taking his name, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma accused that over 2000 facebook accounts run by Pakistani and Bangladeshi operators are engaged in issues related to the state and also endorsing a particular leader. Addressing the special one day session of the Assam assembly CM Sarma hits out at the extra love shown by a particular community organisation based in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Riyadh to the Congress party and its newly appointed leader. He said, “it seems that over 2600 facebook accounts run from Islamabaad, UAE, Riyadh are endorsing a particular leader of Assam. They even don’t give importance to Rahul Gandhi. Either they post on Palestine or they endorse a Congress leader of Assam.”
The CM further said that these accounts are basically promoting the narrative of the Congress party and their campaign. The Assam police special branch has launched an investigation on the activities of these social media accounts, half of which are run from Pakistan and the other half from neighbouring Bangladesh.
CM Sarma further elaborate that very systematically these accounts are influencing election related contents in Assam. He said the large scale of digital campaigns originated from a foreign country are primarily trying to influence Assam’s election narrative. The Pakistani spy agency ISI might be involved in this large scale digital invasion in Assam which has a vested interest in the electoral outcome of Assam. The larger evidence of this digital penetration by ISI in Assam will be disclosed before the people of Assam on 10th September, CM Sarma added.
CM Sarma further said that a call center bases in Kolkata is managing most of these accounts. The Assam police SB is investigating the probable linkup between the Kolkata based call center and the Pakistan, Bangladesh origin social media accounts. He also mentioned that most of these accounts belong to a particular community and created in a same date. The Assam CM is continuously voicing against a probable link between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s British wife and the Pakistan spy agency ISI. In February this year CM Sarma claimed that MP Gaurav Gogoi visited Pakistan without informing the Indian authority when his father Tarun Gogoi was CM of Assam. Though initially he rejected it, last month Gaurav Gogoi confessed that he visited Pakistan in 2013.
It should be mentioned that during ‘Operation Sindoor’ many Pakistani social media handles spread fake news on Assam. These accounts claimed that Indian army convoy were attacked in Guwahati using fake video. Later on Assam police issued statement on the fake news spread by Pakistan based social media accounts.
