In a distressing development that highlights the alarming rise of crimes against women across the state, a heinous case of child rape has come to light, exposing not only the criminal act itself but also the glaring inadequacies of law enforcement and administrative oversight. The incident, involving a six-year-old girl raped in a mosque premises, states the urgent need for the government and Congress-led authorities to take decisive action to curb such atrocities and restore public confidence.

According to reports, a 55-year-old man identified as Mohammed Mahafus, originally from Uttar Pradesh, has been detained and placed in judicial custody following allegations from the victim’s mother. The mother claims that her daughter was lured into a room at Shams Masjid in Chikkaballapur city, where the accused, exploiting the trust placed in him, took her away under the guise of offering chocolates and subsequently committed the heinous act.

The case has also revealed disturbing details about the misuse of religious spaces. The room where the crime allegedly occurred was reportedly allocated to the accused’s son, Suheb, a cleric serving in another mosque. It is alleged that Mahafus exploited this arrangement, misusing the sacred space for his criminal intent. The local community has expressed outrage, with residents confronting the cleric and condemning the misuse of the mosque premises.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting severe backlash. The mother of the victim reportedly physically assaulted the accused in her fury, reflecting the deep anguish and helplessness faced by families affected by such crimes.

This disturbing event is not isolated. Recent weeks have seen a surge in heinous crimes against women and minors across Karnataka, painting a grim picture of the law and order situation under the current administration. Just days prior, reports emerged of a gang rape involving minors at a resort on the outskirts of Belagavi. Another incident involved six individuals gang-raping a minor girl in a remote hill area under Kakati police station limits. These incidents underscore a disturbing pattern of increasing sexual violence, revealing the failure of the authorities to ensure safety and justice for vulnerable populations.

Critics and advocacy groups have pointed fingers at the Congress-led government, accusing it of neglecting the safety of women and children. They argue that despite numerous warnings and earlier incidents, the government has failed to implement effective preventive measures, strengthen policing, or create awareness about safeguarding women and minors. The lack of accountability and insufficient policing infrastructure have emboldened perpetrators and allowed such crimes to proliferate.
