In a decisive move to enforce the rule of law, the administration of Saharanpur district carried out the demolition of an illegally constructed mosque on May 31. The structure was reportedly built on community land without the necessary permissions, prompting legal action that culminated in a court directive ordering its removal. The mosque had become a subject of dispute after locals raised concerns over the unauthorized use of the land, which officially belongs to the village community. Following complaints and prolonged litigation, the court ruled in favor of upholding property rights and directed the local authorities to remove the unauthorized structure.

On the morning of May 31, a team of officials from the local administration, accompanied by law enforcement personnel, arrived at the site to enforce the court order. The demolition was carried out swiftly, with machinery used to raze the structure to the ground.

The administration ensured that the process was peaceful and conducted under tight security to prevent any disturbance. No incidents of violence or unrest were reported during the operation.

An official spokesperson stated, “The demolition was executed as per the court’s directive. Our priority is to uphold the law and protect community rights. Unauthorized constructions on gram sabha land will not be tolerated.”

The Illegal Construction and Land Ownership

The mosque in question was constructed several months ago on a plot of land categorized as gram sabha (village community) property. Gram sabha land is collectively owned by the village residents and is managed for public or communal use. Unauthorized private constructions on such land violate existing land laws and local regulations.

According to records, no permission or legal clearance was obtained from the village council or relevant government authorities before the mosque was built. This led to protests from sections of the village population, who demanded restoration of the land and removal of the encroachment.Following complaints, the district administration initiated an investigation. It was found that the mosque had indeed been erected without any official approval, which constituted a violation of land use policies.

The matter escalated to the district court, where hearings were conducted to assess the legality of the structure. After reviewing evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court ordered the demolition of the illegal mosque to restore the village land to its rightful status.

The court’s verdict emphasised the importance of adherence to land laws and rejected claims justifying the unauthorized construction on communal land. The order mandated that the mosque be demolished promptly, with no further encroachment permitted.
