Pakistan’s Misinformation Blitz: Over 40 fake news claims debunked by PIB amid Operation Sindoor

In the wake of Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has unleashed a barrage of misinformation targeting India, with over 40 fake news claims exposed by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). From fabricated cyberattacks on India’s power grid to a false drone strike on the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara, these deceptive narratives aim to sow panic and discord. The PIB has urged the public to rely on official sources and remain vigilant amid escalating tensions between the two nations

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has identified and debunked over 40 instances of fake news propagated by Pakistan-based sources amid escalating tensions with India following Operation Sindoor. On May 10, 2025, the PIB swiftly addressed a series of misleading social media posts, including false claims of a Pakistani cyberattack on India’s electricity grid and a fabricated drone strike on the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara, as part of a broader wave of misinformation targeting the public.

Wave of Misinformation Post-Operation Sindoor

The surge in fake news followed India’s precision airstrikes on terrorist camps across the border under Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. These strikes, aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure, triggered a flood of deceptive posts from Pakistani social media accounts intended to incite unrest and confusion in India.

Among the false narratives, the PIB’s Fact Check Unit tackled claims circulating between late Wednesday and early Thursday, alleging that a Pakistani cyberattack had crippled 70 per cent of India’s electricity grid. Additional misinformation included assertions of a temporary closure of the Mumbai-Delhi airline route and a supposed Indian drone attack on the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara, a sacred Sikh site in Pakistan’s Punjab province and the birthplace of Guru Nanak. After a thorough investigation, the PIB dismissed all these claims as entirely baseless.

In response to the rampant spread of false narratives, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a cybersecurity advisory on May 10, 2025, to caution the public against online misinformation. The advisory read, “Critical Online Safety Alert: Always follow cybersecurity precautions. Stay cautious while online—don’t fall for traps or misinformation. Be patriotic, stay vigilant, stay safe. #DigitalIndia #OperationSindoor.”

The PIB also specifically refuted the claim of an attack on the Nankana Sahib Gurdwara, emphasising that such reports were being deliberately spread to incite communal discord. The government reiterated the importance of relying on official sources for accurate information during this period of heightened tension.

The misinformation campaign is part of a larger effort to destabilise public sentiment amid the India-Pakistan conflict. The PIB has checked over 40 fake news claims, including fabricated videos, doctored images, and baseless allegations, aimed at creating panic and confusion. These include false reports of military attacks, downed aircraft, and infrastructure damage, many of which misuse old or unrelated content to mislead the public.

Fake News 1: Indian Soldiers Crying and Abandoning Posts

A viral video circulating on social media claims that Indian soldiers, overwhelmed by the intensity of the India-Pakistan conflict, were seen crying and abandoning their posts. The video, however, is an old and unrelated clip that has been falsely linked to recent events. The PIB Fact Check team has categorically declared this claim as fake and baseless.
