NEW DELHI: A manipulated video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being widely circulated on social media with the false claim that he described India as the world’s second-largest beef producer during an address in Auckland, New Zealand. However, an official fact-check by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has categorically dismissed the claim as fake, confirming that PM Modi actually said “India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer.”

The misleading clip appears to have been edited or misrepresented to distort the Prime Minister’s remarks, prompting authorities to urge the public to verify such claims through official sources before sharing them.

The PIB Fact Check unit issued a clarification on social media, stating, “This claim is Fake. PM Modi did not make any such statement. At the Auckland event, he stated that India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer.”

The government also shared the original, unedited video of the speech and urged citizens to remain cautious of misleading content circulating online.

The transcript of PM Modi’s speech, available on the official Prime Minister’s website (pmindia.gov.in), clearly records his remarks. In the speech, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s economic and agricultural achievements, saying:

“Today India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy. India is the world’s largest vaccine producer. India is among the leading countries in the world in mobile data consumption. Today India is the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturer. Today India is the world’s second-largest telecom market. Today India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer. Today India is the world’s largest milk producer. Today India is the world’s second-largest fish producer.”

There is no reference whatsoever to India being the world’s second-largest beef producer. The speech was also reported by news agency ANI, whose coverage exactly matches the official transcript.

According to ANI, PM Modi stated, “Today India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy. India is the world’s largest vaccine producer. India is among the leading countries in the world in terms of mobile data usage. India is the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturer. India is the world’s second-largest telecom market. India is the world’s second-largest wheat producer. India is the world’s largest milk producer. India is the world’s second-largest fish producer.”

The ANI report provides further independent confirmation that the viral claim is entirely false. To verify the authenticity of the viral clip, fact-checkers examined the original video uploaded on PM Modi’s official YouTube channel.

The speech is available in the channel’s Shorts section, where subtitles accompanying the video clearly display the words “second-largest wheat producer.” The original visuals and captions leave no ambiguity about what PM Modi actually said, exposing the circulating clip as misleading.

The viral claim appears to rely on a manipulated or selectively edited version of the speech that falsely replaces the word “wheat” with “beef.” Such edited videos are frequently used to spread misinformation, particularly involving political leaders and public figures, by taking statements out of context or altering audio and captions to create a false narrative.

The official transcript, video recording and independent media reports all contradict the viral claim.

Following the spread of the misleading video, the PIB advised citizens to rely only on verified government platforms and official sources for authentic information. Authorities urged social media users to exercise caution before forwarding sensational claims and to verify viral content through credible fact-checking channels.
