Guwahati: In a politically explosive development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has levelled a series of sensational allegations against Congress MP and Deputy Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi. At a press conference held in Guwahati on May 6, CM Sarma accused Gogoi of facilitating visits to the Pakistan Embassy for radicalisation purposes, harbouring ties with the Pakistani military, and concealing questionable foreign travel activities linked to his family.

The Chief Minister alleged that during his tenure in Delhi, Gogoi not only travelled to Pakistan for 15 days but also accompanied nearly 90 Indian youths—both boys and girls—to the Pakistan Embassy in New Delhi under the pretext of visiting another diplomatic mission. CM Sarma claimed that some of the individuals have provided statements supporting the allegation, saying they were unaware they were being taken to the Pakistan Embassy and that their visit was later used for radicalisation.

“He took innocent youth to a foreign mission with ulterior motives. Some of them later testified that they were misled. This is a serious national security concern,” said CM Sarma. “When we have arrested others for similar acts, how can a sitting MP be exempt? If the evidence is verified, action will follow—no one is above the law when it comes to national interest.”

CM Sarma also claimed that Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, had allegedly received a salary from a Pakistan-based organisation during her time in Delhi, and further alleged that she had made 19 visits between India and Pakistan. “There are strong indications that she had interactions with the Pakistani military. I’m expecting documentary evidence by September 10, which will be submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge,” CM Sarma declared.

In another striking claim, CM Sarma said that Gogoi had surrendered his child’s passport and questioned the motive behind it. “If his children find out that their grandfather was the respected Tarun Gogoi, but their father gave up their Indian passport, it will be a betrayal of legacy,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Referring to other international visits, Sarma alleged that during a trip to Israel, Gogoi reported a lost passport to the Israeli authorities—a move CM Sarma suggested may have been an attempt to hide crucial travel records. “Had we recovered that passport, more truth would have emerged,” he said, adding that Gogoi also spent seven days in Nepal and possibly visited other undisclosed countries.

The Chief Minister urged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the party high command to clarify their stand on Gogoi’s alleged activities. “Is this the new face of Congress politics? The country has the right to know,” CM Sarma said, indicating that he would formally raise the matter with Congress President Kharge.

CM Sarma, however, maintained that this is just the tip of the iceberg. “Once we verify the documents and dig deeper into his foreign connections, more startling truths will emerge. This investigation is far from over,” he concluded.
